... Lotus Domino 4.5 Server Now Available on DIGITAL NT
                       AlphaServer Systems...

ORLANDO, Fla., January 27, 1997 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
today announced breakthrough performance results for Lotus Domino on
DIGITAL AlphaServer systems running Microsoft Windows NT. In
addition, the company announced the availability of Lotus Domino 4.5
Server on its AlphaServer systems and Prioris Intel-based Windows NT
systems. Domino is a market-leading solution for messaging,
groupware and collaborative Web applications.

     The DIGITAL dual-processor AlphaServer 4100 5/400 achieved
record-setting results, with 3,100 concurrent mail users at a 1
second response time. The benchmark tests were conducted by DIGITAL
using Lotus NotesBench, and audited by KMDS Technical Associates.

Lotus NotesBench provides a methodology and tools for measuring
Notes and Domino server performance. DIGITAL is a charter member of
the NotesBench Consortium, an independent organization dedicated to
providing Domino and Notes performance information to customers.
NotesBench results can be found at http://www.lotus.com/ntsdoc96, or
at http://www.digital.com/info/alphaserver.

"DIGITAL results exceed previous Windows NT Intel and RISC
NotesBench results and exceed NotesBench performance records on any
platform," said Pauline Nist, DIGITAL vice president of AlphaServer
Business. "DIGITAL's full line of scalable servers, from Pentium-
based Prioris servers to AlphaServer systems, supports any Lotus
Domino environment. The AlphaServer platform provides customers a
uniform, highly scalable and seamless growth path as the number of
Lotus Domino users and applications expand."

"Increasingly, our customers are running their businesses with
mission-critical, collaborative groupware applications," said Eileen
Rudden, senior vice president, Communications Products Development,
Lotus. "AlphaServer and Lotus Domino together provide the
functionality and horsepower to satisfy demanding Internet and
Intranet environments."

Domino 4.5 on DIGITAL NT Servers

Domino 4.5 on AlphaServer systems and Intel-based Prioris
servers running the Windows NT operating system enables customers to
consolidate a Lotus Notes and Domino server environment. A single
AlphaServer system can replace dozens of other servers, resulting in
significant cost savings. ServerWORKS system management software,
included with every AlphaServer system, simplifies server and
network management. Customers also benefit from increased operating
efficiency and a lower cost of ownership.

With DIGITAL Cluster software for Windows NT, multiple systems
can be grouped together to ensure continuous, uninterrupted services
and provide investment protection for Lotus Domino users.

According to Tom Loch, vice president and CIO of Universal
Pensions, Brainerd, Minn., "Our business needs a single platform to
meet our Windows NT and Lotus Notes enterprise processing
environments. The Digital/Lotus solution provides two critical
solutions: it meets the high demand for both CPU and I/O routines,
and it cost-effectively scales to accommodate our business growth."

We selected the DIGITAL AlphaServer 4100 with Lotus Notes and
Domino for the express reason that it gets very, very critical
trading information to exactly where it's needed in an extremely
quick, efficient, and accurate way," said Thomas Ryan, president,
American Stock Exchange.

Steve White, Data Processing Operations Manager for the Texas
Association of Counties, added, "The AlphaServer gives us
extraordinary Notes performance. It's one of the most powerful
servers I have ever worked with. I nearly needed a seat belt to
operate it!"

DIGITAL and Lotus Demos at Lotusphere

At Lotusphere booth #A51, DIGITAL will demonstrate its Clusters
for Windows NT software, Lotus Notes and Domino-supported
technologies. The DIGITAL demos will show how Lotus Notes and Domino
databases on Alpha, along with industry-leading Internet products
such as AltaVista, enable information to be easily searched and
viewed.

Digital Equipment Corporation is a world leader in open client/
server solutions from personal computing to integrated worldwide
information systems. DIGITAL's scalable Alpha and Intel platforms,
storage, networking, software and services, together with industry-
focused solutions from business partners, help organizations compete
and win in today's global marketplace.

ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- Jan. 27, 1997--In
response to growing customer demand, Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Lotus
Development Corporation today announced several joint initiatives further
building on the companies' commitment to providing the most complete
Internet/intranet solutions for the enterprise.

The two companies are expanding their efforts to provide tighter integration
between the Lotus Domino(TM) 4.5 server and the Sun Solaris(TM) operating
environment, to pursue joint Java(TM) applet and application development, to
develop more Lotus products for SPARC(TM) and Intel Platform Editions, and
to create a new channel program.

At Lotusphere, Sun will be demonstrating in booth A79-84 the following Lotus
products for Solaris SPARC and Intel Editions: Domino 4.5 server, Notes(TM)
4.5 client, cc:Mail(TM) messaging system, NotesPump(TM) data distribution
server, SMTP Message Transfer Agent (MTA), plus Java APIs and connectivity
tools.

"Lotus and Sun share a common vision of interoperable and scalable solutions
for the enterprise and Internet/intranet," said Eileen Rudden, senior VP,
Communications Product Development, Lotus Development Corp. "The current
joint activities we are undertaking are exciting and will continue to result
in even more tightly integrated and scalable solutions for our joint
enterprise customers and business partners."

According to Mark Tolliver, vice president of Market Development at Sun
Microsystems, Inc., "Sun is enthusiastic about its relationship with Lotus
because the company sees a real need for solutions that are scalable in the
area of enterprise Internet/ intranet computing. We are particularly pleased
with the level of support from Lotus in their Java development efforts and
the work that is being done to support customers."

New Domino 4.5 Integration with Solaris for SPARC and Intel Platform
Editions

Domino 4.5 for Solaris SPARC and Intel Platform Editions has been enhanced
in this release to provide tighter integration with the Solaris operating
environment, taking advantage of native Sun event logging, fault recovery
and high availability features. These features give users more reliable
access to their data and better uptime on their server.

Domino 4.5 for Solaris SPARC and Intel Platform Editions provides
administrators with a single event tracking environment for both Domino and
the Solaris operating environment. The fault recovery system in Domino 4.5
for Solaris enhances reliability and automates the process of system
clean-up, restart and diagnostics in the event of a Domino server fault.

It allows an administrator to completely customize the response to a Domino
server including integration with Sun's logging and debugging facilities.

Additionally, Lotus and Sun are working together to provide high
availability for Lotus Domino on Solaris. This joint development includes
Lotus Domino integration with Solstice(TM) HA software, Sun's high
availability products and technologies for enterprise management. Automated
failover support is also available for Sun's currently shipping Solstice HA
1.2 product.

Expanded Java Development

Lotus and Sun continue to work together on a large and rapidly growing list
of Java based application initiatives. To date, these include a prototype of
a Java-based client for Lotus cc:Mail messaging system, shown at Sun's
October 29, 1996 JavaStation(TM) launch in New York; a set of business
productivity applets developed in Java, being previewed at Lotusphere '97;
integration of Java into the Notes 4.5 client and Domino 4.5 server, and
more. Other announcements are planned for the future.

Increased Functionality for Customers Running Solaris for SPARC and Intel

Q1/early Q2.

-- Domino.Action: Provides a powerful set of easy-to-use tools that allow
users to create, populate and manage a Web site, and leverage the
collaborative functionality of Domino to enable and manage multi-site
distributed authoring. Available Q1 for Solaris SPARC and Intel Platform
Editions.

-- Domino.Merchant: Transforms Web sites into online business centers,
creating a complete and secure commerce solution that fits easily into an
organization's current selling model. Available in Q2 for the Solaris
operating environment.

-- SMTP Message Transfer Agent (MTA): Provides a reliable, standards-based
messaging backbone for SMTP networks by extending native protocol and
directory support to the Lotus Domino 4.5 server. Now available for all
platforms with the Domino 4.5 server.

-- HiTest C API: Gives C developers access to the robust, distributed
services of Domino using a high-level, object-based C API. Allows
programmers to quickly learn and exploit the power of Domino. Beta for
Solaris SPARC and Intel Edition now available on the Lotus Web site,
http://www.lotus.com .

-- LotusScript:Data Object (LS:DO): Permits Notes clients and Domino servers
to access and update any ODBC-compatible RDBMS (Relational Database
Management System) using LotusScript. The LotusScript:Data Object is
automatically installed when the Notes client or Domino server software is
installed. Now available for Domino 4.5 for the Solaris operating
environment.

Leading Edge Performance

In a separate announcement today, Sun released performance results for Lotus
NotesBench(TM) software on the Solaris for Intel Edition platform.
NotesBench is a Lotus benchmarking tool that provides a methodology for
measuring Domino server performance. The results show the Solaris operating
environment, running on the Compaq Proliant 5000, producing the best overall
performance results to date for a Domino 4.5 server running on Intel.

Given the load of 2050 Notes Mail users in the Mail test, the Compaq
Proliant 5000/Solaris server achieved a record response time of 0.214
seconds; at a load of 1750 Notes Mail/DB users, a record response time of
0.437 was achieved. The Compaq Proliant Solaris also generated the highest
number yet reported of idle users connected to a Domino server, at 4500
users. The complete NotesBench report may be viewed at
http://www.sun.com/developers/intelbench.html .

New Channel Program

Today, Sun and Lotus will launch a pilot of the new Domino Sun Solutions
Provider Program. This program is designed to build dedicated teams of
Domino on Solaris experts that can help successfully implement and support
customer solutions for the enterprise and Internet/intranet.

Managed by Sun with input and assistance from Lotus, the pilot program will
focus initially on U.S.-based Lotus Premium Business Partners, providing
them with a joint Sun and Lotus training and collaboration forum. Sun and
Lotus plan to expand the pilot in late Q1 to include other qualifying Lotus
Business Partners and Sun allies that are not currently Lotus Business
Partners.

The Power of Working Together

Sun and Lotus have codeveloped enterprise solutions for over four years.
This alliance continues to provide customers with reliable and scalable
network computing solutions.

The solutions that have been developed by Sun and Lotus are already being
used in some of today's most distributed mission- critical environments.
With users located in 250 schools on six islands, Hawaii's Department of
Education has deployed over 15,000 Notes clients on more than 90 Sun(TM)
servers and the enterprise is still growing.

"As we looked for a platform for enterprise wide computing, we considered
Microsoft's Windows NT, but we found that Lotus Notes and Sun servers
offered better price/performance," said Tom Saka, an information specialist
for Hawaii's Department of Education. "The combination of Sun and Lotus is,
most importantly, a more stable and secure platform, and provides better
remote management which is important, since our department extends across
the islands."
