1127.0. "Florida Bound - Overnight Stops?" by SMURF::WALTERS () Tue Mar 18 1997 12:55

I'm planning a drive down to Florida in a month or so, pulling a
pop-up. I have the route all planned out and a trip map from AAA.
Initially, I planned a couple of stopovers in motels,
the first at Roanoke rapids on the NC border, and the second just
    on the Florida border.

I have provisionally booked the motels, but I'm wondering if anyone can
recommend campgrounds that they have used on the way down and back?

    Thanks,

    Colin

I've used thousands, well, maybe not that many...
The ones that stand out in my mind:

Cherry park, just outside of Washington, DC. Pricey.
SOB, South of the Border NC/SC border. Nice, clean, safe, cheap.
KOA at the exit with King's Dominion. I believe it's in Virgina.

we also parked a lot in rest areas, but bing in a motorhome, we could
    get away with it..

What do you mean by "get away with it".
I have not done any cross counrty with my pop-up or I would probably
know this but is it illegal to kind of set up in a rest stop?

'get away with it' == safety first off. 2nd, the police have no idea
where we pulled in for a short rest, or longer stop as we don't have to
    pop up to use.
I have traveled to Calif via pop up before. and sometimes we did raise
for lunch, but never for any long period as it appears as a flag to any
cop that enforces no camping regulations. most rest areas these days
    don't permit 'overnight camping'.
shuchs, in our motorhome, we can take a shower enroute if we feel like
it. I don't recommend any kind of stove cooking. but we have been
known to microwave a cup of coffee.

Thanks for the recommendations. As it happened I drove through and
just took a one night stop in a motel on the outward and return
journeys. It went much faster than anticipated.

Looks like there are plenty of campgrounds to choose from, so maybe
    I'll camp next time.
