5082.1 | | NOVA::SMITHI | Don't understate or underestimate Rdb! | Thu Feb 27 1997 08:55 | 8 |
| Well this notes conference is for both Digital and Oracle. For the Oracle
folks we will be providing some draft versions of the documentation in HTML
format. I do not know how these will be distributed.
I do not know what will be available for customers (such as Digital). I'll
ask...

5082.2 | Internal Oracle web site; plans for external customers | NOVA::RSWONGER | | Thu Feb 27 1997 09:29 | 15 |
| For internal Oracle folks, you can access the latest Rdb doc set in
HTML at http://nova.us.oracle.com/doc_test/index.html. We have
recently added the SQL Reference Manual and the SQL*NET for Rdb beta
documentation.
We have already generated a note for the next Rdb update that goes
to the Oracle community, letting everybody know about the internal
doc site.
For our external customers, including Digital, we are currently
in the process of putting the Rdb documentation set on the Oracle
documentation CD-ROM. There will be other delivery methods in the
future as well; stay tuned.

5082.3 | Strategic direction of online documentation ? | NOMAHS::SECRIST | Rdb WWS; [email protected] | Thu Feb 27 1997 10:10 | 14 |
|
Has any decision been reached concerning whether online
documentation will be offered in PDF, HTML, or both ?
Is there any intent to apply Alta Vista technology to
the documentation to restore the master index ? Are
there any plans to offer this on a public web site in
a similar manner to which Digital makes the OpenVMS
V7.0 documentation set available (i.e. the site
http://www.partner.digital.com/www-swdev/pages/Home
/TECH/documents/vms-docs-v7.0.html) ?

5082.4 | | NOVA::RSWONGER | | Thu Feb 27 1997 11:41 | 9 |
| The strategic direction is HTML; we are working on technologies that
will overcome the printing and navigational shortcomings of current
HTML documentation.
There are plans underway for a public Oracle documentation web site,
off the corporate home page. There are 1-2 people working on this at
the corporate level.

5082.5 | Source files? | NLVMS2::VVISSER | Vincent Visser, Oracle Rdb Support, The Netherlands | Sun Mar 02 1997 13:07 | 10 |
| Roy,
I know that we can access the documentation via the web, but it would
be nice if we could put the HTML files on our local system like the
documentation delivered with Oracle Rdb V7.0.
Is it somewhere on the Oracle network so we can copy it with FTP or
Decnet?
Regards,
Vincent

5082.6 | HTML & PDF files are available on the net | NOVA::RSWONGER | | Thu Mar 06 1997 08:18 | 29 |
| Before giving the location of these files, let me note that the
machine on which the Rdb documentation is located is a development
machine. Both the HTML savesets and the PDF files are relatively
large, so please restrict copying to non-business hours (EST). If we
see too much load from people copying these files, we'll have to
restrict access. We don't want to do that, since one of our major
foci is getting this stuff into your hands.
That said...
The HTML documentation files are in the location noted in note 4.1,
but for V7.0 instead of 6.0: WEORG::RDBDOC_V70. The HTML files are
present as savesets, self-extracting archives for PCs, or TAR files.
The file RDB7HTML_VMS.* is the VMS doc set, while RDB7HTML_OSF.* are
the Digital Unix sets.
The PDF files are in a subdirectory below the RDBDOC_V70: area. The
full directory spec is
WEORG::PUBLIC:[RDBVMSDOC.PUBLIC.V70DOCS.PDF]*.PDF
Note that WEORG is a cluster alias. If you are using FTP to access
the files, then use DISORG, which is a node name.
Also, note that these are the savesets that shipped with Rdb7. We
have added more books for ECO1 (notably the SQL Reference Manual),
and will make those available as we build those kits.
