5056.0. "First WRITE to table in Rdb4.1 database takes long" by ORAREP::NORISQ::SANKARAN () Thu Feb 20 1997 13:45

ENVIRONMENT:
Rdb v4.1
Multifile database
Adjustable Lock Granularity is DISABLED
Number of Buffers 40
Snapshots are enabled DEFERRED

PROBLEM:
The FIRST WRITE to a table (with approx. 21,000 rows, 3 indices) that updates
a single column (defined as the Primary Key in the UNIQUE index) takes about
5 minutes. The subsequent writes are almost instantaneous.

Any clues as to why the first write takes so long?

Forgot to mention in ENVIRONMENT that the database runs on VMS (not sure what
version).

Do you have the Rdb docs? There is a section in the Guide to Database
Performance and Tuning that is likely to describe the scenario you are
seeing and it give suggestions on how to address it. It is in chapter
3 and is titled "Recognizing Poor Insert Performance Caused by
    Excessive Page Checking".

This was originally published in the V5.1 Release notes, and then incorporated
into V6.0.

If this user has V4.1 then they will not have the docs.

I also published it here as a Technical Note (look in 9.*). Print a copy and
use that.
