5018.0. "RBs decrease in # then increase?" by M5::LWILCOX (Chocolate in January!!) Tue Feb 11 1997 10:31

Maybe I need more coffee (or less...) or I'm just forgetting something real
basic here.

I had a customer RMU/CLOSE/CLUSTER/ABORT=DELPRC/WAIT on a db that seemed to
be "hung". As expected, RB processes started up, about 150 of them. They
seemed to take longer than expected, so I had him SHOW PROC/CONT/ID on a
few to be sure something was happenning. They were getting CPU and I/O.
Another SHOW SYSTEM would show various of the RB processes in RWSCS and
others of them in PFW. It would also show fewer and fewer RBs, and even
got down to just 1, but then the next SHOW SYSTEM would show 140 or so
again. I don't recall seeing the number of RBs go down then shoot back
up again. This is the part that puzzles me. Is this "usual" and I just
haven't seen it? This went on for about a half hour with RBs decreasing
then increasing in number. Then they all finished.

Thanks.

I imagine that the monitor log file will indicate what was going on.
Do they use the logical name to control the number of DBRs that run?

Ah, good thought. Let's say it was set to 20, would the first 20 DBRs
finish before the next 20 start, or does a new one start as each one
finishes?

Thanks.

5018.3Monitor waits until ALL active DBRs have finishedNOVA::R_ANDERSONOracle Corporation (603) 881-1935Sat Feb 15 1997 08:025
If you specified a max DBR count of "20" then the monitor will start 20
DBRs at once and wait for them ALL to finish before starting the NEXT
    batch of 20 DBRs.

Also, if Global buffers are enabled you only get one DBR at a time.

Thanks, Rick, just what I needed!!
