4999.0. "Q: RMU/COPY " by ORAREP::OSOSPS::HIRAIWA (Yoshitaka Hiraiwa/SPS) Wed Feb 05 1997 06:17

Hi, I have a question about channelcnt and Rdb.

My customer uses Rdb/VAX V6.01-5 on VMS V6.1.
They created the database that has 2266 storage areas.
The create statement and rmu/backup work fine. But they did RMU/COPY and gets
the following error.

-RMS-F-CHN, assign channel system service request failed

Is this a restriction or not?
Anyway, I told them to reduce the number of areas under 1950.

Channelcnt, sysgen parameter, is 2047. this is the maximum value.

Best regards,
Yoshitaka Hiraiwa/SPS/MCS/Japan

If they have an axp it may be easier. AXP (vms7) has a max
    channelcnt of 65k.

I don't know for sure, but I bet RMU opens all areas in both the source
and destination database. That will be a LOT of channels.

Used to be that Rdb had a hard limit of around 256 (or was it 512) rda and
snp files open. I know the limit was raised, but I can't remember in what
version.

Anyway, You've got one heck of a lot of storage areas!

Mark.

the current version of Rdb (and the current ECOs too) allow for
2047 channels on VAX (the VMS limit) and a 'basically' unlimited number
of Alpha (8k?). Remember that each storage area really is two files
(the .RDA file and the .SNP file) so the limit is really about 1000
storage areas open at a time.

So 2236 storage areas would be at least 4473 channels and on vax that is
too many.

Now the question is, is this the cause of his error.

G'day,

Mark.

It is likely either that or a lack of one of:

    	FILLM
    	CHANNELCNT
    	BYTELM
