4995.0. "Ranked Sorted Index is what???" by ORAREP::JRFVAX::HODGES () Tue Feb 04 1997 10:42

    My technical question is:

    	What does "rank" mean in the context of a sorted index? I've looked
    in multiple V7 manuals and haven't really found a definition!

    My secondary question (based on frustration from trying to answer the
    first one!) is:

    	What happened to the Master Index in the V7 doc set? That is THE
    most valuable book of all!!! B-)

    Thanks,
    Mary Ann

4995.1Different levels of maintaining index cardinalitiesBOUVS::OAKEYI'll take Clueless for $500, AlexTue Feb 04 1997 11:2615

This is how I understand it :)

Ranked and pseudo-ranked are different methods of maintaining row
cardinality in the index. Ranked indexes maintain precise cardinalities.
Pseudo-ranked indexes maintain approximate cardinalities. For the vast
majority of cases, the cardinalities maintained by pseudo-ranking are
sufficient enough to provide the optimizer with the additional information
required to make more educated retrieval strategies.

4995.2HOTRDB::LASTOVICAIs it possible to be totally partial?Tue Feb 04 1997 12:037
    in particular, a ranked index contains cardinality information in each
    index node. this allows for the optimizer to know 'more' about the
    expected row count(s) as it traverses down the index (the closer to the
    leaf nodes, the more relevant the information becomes). rdb's use of
    'pseduo' means that the cardinality information within the nodes of the
    index isn't exact; it is just 'close'; similar to how table
    cardinalities in rdb are not 100% accurate, just close.
4995.3where's the rest of the story. . . . ORAREP::JRFVAX::HODGESTue Feb 04 1997 13:475
    Thanks!!! My guesses were WAY off base! So I'm really glad I asked!

    Now, what about the Master Index to the doc set?

Have to leave that for the writers :)

    Perhaps the master index to the doc set is also pseudo ranked ;-)
4995.6Two reasons for no master indexNOVA::RSWONGERTue Feb 04 1997 16:0222
	We decided not to produce a master index book for Rdb7, for two
	reasons:

	1) Producing a master index is labor intensive. We had to make the
	tradeoff between producing the index book and documenting new
	functionality. New functionality won.

	2) We provided the entire Rdb7 doc set in PDF (Adobe Acrobat)
	format, on the client CD-ROM. Included with this set of PDF books is
	a great index built with Adobe Acrobat Catalog. FOr those unfamiliar
	with the Acrobat Catalog product, it creates a master index for a
	set of books, and provides search capability based on single words,
	phrases, and all that good stuff that you can do with computers.

	The downside to the Acrobat Catalog master index is that you will
	need Adobe ACrobat Exchange to use it. Exchange costs money (not
	alot, but more than the free Acrobat Viewer), but if you are
	interested in using the master index capability, this is the product
	to use. This is one way in which we're trying to provide more "value
	added" in our online documentation.

4995.7Sure doesn't help me support Rdb!ORAREP::JRFVAX::HODGESTue Feb 04 1997 16:564
    Now if only I could plug that CD into the coffee maker in my hotel
    room, I could use the Master Index.

    Thanks for the explanation, anyway.

    Ah, then you need a laptop PC with a CDROM drive.

    I saw an article somewhere about the "return of the luggable", now that
    a useable "laptop" has to have so much stuff with it.
4995.9At least it runs on a PC !NOMAHS::SECRISTRdb WWS; [email protected]Mon Feb 10 1997 15:0515

mine says Oracle RDB7 Client for WIN3.1/WIN NT/WIN95....

A48650-1 on the CD.

The CD contains Acrobat something or another you can pull off.

4995.11How about bundleing personal Alta Vista ?NOMAHS::SECRISTRdb WWS; [email protected]Wed Feb 12 1997 17:5819

    	A48650-1 does NOT include the complete Rdb documentation set,
    	just major parts of it (which is welcomed with open arms, I
    	was just wondering if the rest of it was available yet). You
    	can however install a complete Oracle7 7.3 doc set from the
    	Rdb client CD ;-)

    	Will Rdb get a "bookshelf" type index in a future release
    	like we provide for the Oracle7 doc set on the same CD ?
    	It is not a master index, but it is an improvement over
    	nothing.

    	What about bundleing a personal Alta Vista for use with the
    	Rdb doc set (which is how I was hoping to get around this
    	when I get the time) ?

4995.12All but RNs and BYI should be thereWEORG::GREMBOWICZThu Feb 13 1997 08:4412

    What Rdb books are missing? We didn't ship the Release
    Notes (for Rdb and SQL/Services) and the Before You Install letter, but
    I thought we shipped the rest of the docs in a self-extracting archive file.

    Let me know what docs are missing.

4995.13SQL Ref. Vol. 2 & 3 are missing !NOMAHS::SECRISTRdb WWS; [email protected]Thu Feb 13 1997 10:2023

    	The CD does not include the SQL Reference Manual, Volume 2
    	(A42813-1) and Volume 3 (A42812-1). Since other multivolume
    	documents like the Performance and Tuning Guide were
    	combined into one volume for the PDF version, I assume this
    	was an oversight and the wrong file got put on the CD
    	because what made it on to the client CD (A48650-1) was
    	only the first part. Pointers to the complete set of
    	SQL Reference Manuals in PDF would be appreciated.

    	One nit about the printed SQL manuals while I'm at it:
    	the spine of the SQL Reference Manual, Volume 1 doesn't
    	say "SQL" in it, although the cover does. It simply
    	says "Oracle Rdb7 Reference Manual Volume 1."

    	When it comes to what is BETWEEN the covers though
    	(which is what is really important) it seems to be our
    	usual, world-class documentation that customers use to
    	judge the rest of the industry (and Oracle) ;-)

4995.15Sorry Jay & Helen -- my mistake !NOMAHS::SECRISTRdb WWS; [email protected]Thu Feb 13 1997 11:0214

    	Whoops ! My mistake ! Helen just pointed out to me offline
    	that Volume 2 starts on page 513 and Volume 3 on page 1109.
    	I guess I was so used to using the Performance manual that
    	was clearly labelled volumes 1 AND 2 that I didn't look
    	hard enough... not to mention why I couldn't get the index
    	to work right ;-)

    	Apologies to Helen, Jay, etal. Please increment your
    	BREWS_OWED counter with my thanks...
