4955.2 | oracle7 home dir entry overwritten | M5::DDAYBERR | | Fri Jan 24 1997 17:43 | 24 |

The customer had Oracle 7.2 running for quite some time and uses
it everyday.
He then decided to install RMUWIN, P.B.Monitor, Q.P.Tuner,
Sqlsrv Manager, Perf. Monitor and ODBC. After the install, he
rebooted his PC and found Oracle 7.2 didn't work. He called Oracle
NT support(TAR# 1095098 possibly in Canada) and the bottom line,
according to the customer, was that the Oracle 7.2 home directory
registry entry had been overwritten.
To get Oracle 7.2 running again, he removed the RDB registry
entry, and Oracle 7.2 has been working fine since then.
I'm afraid my ignorance with NT will probably surprise you, but
I did want to 'warn' you Sue. :) Let me know of anything else we
need from the customer or myself. He did explain that the home
directory for Oracle 7 was orainst/DBS, and when the RDB client
installation asked for a rdb 7 home directory, he told it RDB. It
seems then, that there should have been two seperate entries for
both database products...?

4955.3 | Can't change an existing Oracle Home | SQLSRV::MAVRIS | Sue Mavris - [email protected] | Mon Jan 27 1997 17:20 | 16 |
| Ah ha!! During an Oracle installation, the installer asks for Oracle
installation settings. On this screen, you're asked to provide the Oracle
Home. If you've installed any Oracle products already, this will default to
your existing Oracle Home. If any Oracle products are already installed,
the default Oracle Home must be used.
When your customer entered ORAINST/RDB, the Oracle Home was changed. This
broke Oracle 7.2.
If they want to reinstall Rdb without breaking Oracle 7.2, they just need to
take the default Oracle Home during the Rdb install.
The Oracle Installer help is misleading in this area. We'll try to let the
right people know about this problem.

4955.4 | Can different directories be created afterwards? | M5::DDAYBERR | | Thu Jan 30 1997 11:22 | 8 |
| Thank-you very much Sue, for the explanation.
Does this mean that all Oracle products have to reside in the
same directory, or can products be relocated to their own directory,
after the upgrade? Thanks again.

4955.5 | Our products are in different subdirectories | SQLSRV::MAVRIS | Sue Mavris - [email protected] | Thu Jan 30 1997 14:36 | 9 |
| Hi Debbie,
I haven't done a lot of Oracle installs, but I think of the Oracle home as
the root directory for Oracle products. From what I've seen, Oracle products
you install are installed in subdirectories under that root. The ODBC Driver
is put in a subdirectory called "ODBRDB32" for example. So, I don't think you
have to worry about different products being mixed up in the same directory.
