Does anyone know the procedure for filing a claim in small claims court
in El Paso County? How long does it take to get a hearing date?

You go down to the court house downtown (small claims division) and ask
for the paperwork. It includes the instructions on how to go about it.
I don't remember the particulars. Neither side is allowed a lawyer,
but either side can request that it be moved to County court where they
can have lawyers. I checked into it once many years ago but never
followed through. I didn't have the $25 filing fee at the time.

It took 3 or 4 weeks in my case. There was a limit of a few thousand
dollars, which I think has been upped since then. You can subpoena
witnesses and have the sheriff serve the defendant. Not quite
Perry Mason, but it was a satisfying experience, crisp and fair.
