I drove one last Saturday. All in All not bad. My wife and I test
drove a CRV and a Rav4. I was more impressed with the Rav4. The CRV
to me seemed more mini-van like. I got a kick out of the picnic table
in the back. It was roomier than the Rav4 but some of the negatives.
- Tilt wheel with only two position lever. (Up or Down)
- Taillights mounted real high. (Like GM mini-vans)
- All sent to dealer the same. All options are dealer installed.
- From what the sales guy said the truck is front wheel drive (100%)
until the wheels start to slip, then 30-40% of the power is sent
to the back.

There is a detail article in this month (April)'s Car and Driver.
Interesting thing is about this vehicle: it is suppose have similar
interior room when compare to Jeep's GC. Also, high clearance 8.5
inches.

8.5 inches is not considered high clearance in my book. Raised a bit from
a street driven car perhaps. My Lotus Europa was low at 4 inches. What was
the clearance on the AMC Eagle?
Is this another paid writeup in a magazine? I believe that they usually
pay the writers to be favorable to them.

1635.6 | Lowest point of clearance, not the door sills. ;-) | HSOSS1::HARDMAN | It's a girl! Now what? | Thu Mar 20 1997 09:33 | 13 |
| Dave, they're measuring to the lowest point on the vehicle. On most
vehicles, that's the bottom of the rear diff housing. With the standard
27" weenie tires that most new vehicles ship with, that diff housing is
very close to mother Earth. ;-)
Using a real tiny ring gear would help clearance, but at the expense of
reliability. The ThunderTruck(tm) has lots of clearance between the
frame and ground but with it's 10.5-inch ring gear and massive housing
in the rear, ground clearance at that lowest point is not that great.
It drags over lots of boulders! :-)

| Ground clearance doesn't seem to be a factor in the showroom:
both Subaru and Audi are currently undergoing record sales with
AWD cars.

| Most people could care less about ground clearance. They are looking
for awd to save their asses from the ditch. Most people don't realize
that 4wd can actually put them into the ditch easier than they would
want to. Although on a Subaru they really don't do true 4wd anyway so
it probably wouldn't matter.

of them that I've seen had an 'S' on the end. Willys. :-) :-)

1635.12 | Ps.. the 64 Landrover body was aluminum | PTOSS1::MATSCHERZ | | Fri Mar 21 1997 09:14 | 8 |
| Speaking of Willys overlands. I saw one while I was snowmobiling in a
little town in Michigan. The body (believe it or not) was in mint
condition. No rust on it ! It was sitting in someones side yard.
Looks like it need some work but the fact that all the panels were
straight was a Miracle. Especially since it was sitting outside. There
was about 3-4 ft of snow piled around it and on top of it.
Stevem..
ps.. this was up by the Mackinaw bridge. Oh, and it was for sale..
