287.130 | computer says GB 34, NE 20 | HBAHBA::HAAS | Dorsey Levens Roolz!~ | Fri Jan 24 1997 11:55 | 14 |
| USA Today has a computer s[t]imulation of SB XXXI.
The computer prorgam predicts that Green Bay will win, 34-20. In the
third quarter, Favre tossses a TD to Antonio Freeman to break the tie at
20. With about 2 minutes to go in the game, Edgar Bennett scores for the
final score.
The computer played 25,000 games. Green Bay won about 3/4 of 'em. The
average score for all games was Green Bay 24-17. When the Packers won,
the average score was 27-15.
Supposedly, the computer is 8-1.

Swami: Hot vs. hotter
By Chris Berman
From ESPN SportsCenter
_________________________________________________________________
For 15 seasons, the Swami's magic carpet has jetted to the Super Bowl.

the Super Bowl.
We know we can pick from two hot teams. From Nov. 24 on -- that's the
Sunday before Thanksgiving -- the Packers are a perfect 7-0.
They've been relentless in the second half. They've averaged 32 points
per game in that span. They've scored 65 points in their two playoff
wins.
But, the Patriots are almost as hot ... or, as they say in Boston,
"hawt."
They are 6-1 in that span. The defense has really come on, allowing
only 10 points per game. They've allowed only nine points combined in
their two playoff wins.
With both teams so hot, how come the Patriots are getting about two
touchdowns?
In 1985, when the Pats played the Super Bowl-shuffle Chicago Bears,
they got only 10 points. Now they're getting more!
In 31 Super Bowls, there have been six point spreads of two touchdowns
or more -- the first three, (the first two obviously involving the
Packers), and now, the last three.
Here come the Pack again, proving what goes around, comes around. The
big favorites are only 3-2 against the number, though. Remember Dallas
won, but didn't cover last year.
Maybe the spread is so big because it's in New Orleans.
This is the eighth Super Bowl played in the Big Easy. The first seven
have been Easily Big:
Super Bowl IV: 23-7, Kansas City over Minnesota.
Super Bowl VI: 24-3, Dallas over Miami.
Super Bowl IX: 16-6, Pittsburgh over Minnesota.
Super Bowl XII: 27-10, Dallas over Denver.
Super Bowl XV: 27-10, Oakland over Philly.
But the last two games in New Orleans have really epitomized the AFC's
losing streak.
Super Bowl XX: The Bears, 46-10 over the P-Men.
Super Bowl XXIV: The Niners, 55-10 over the Broncos, the worst two
defeats in Super Bowl history.
In short, the NFC teams were the animals and for the AFC, the
Louisiana Superdome became the house of the rising sun.
This is a game that Mike Holmgren will get his credit of being the
offensive genius of the '90s, as Bill Walsh and Joe Gibbs were of the
'80s.
The Pack led the NFL in scoring. Brett Favre had 39 touchdown passes.
Yet, only Favre and Keith Jackson from the offense made the Pro Bowl
from the Packers.
What does that tell you? They got a great scheme.
What else does it tell you? They're gonna win, and since all four
losing teams in the Super Bowls played in the Superdome scored 10, why
change?
27-10, Green Bay on the frozen hurricanes of Bourbon Street.
Mothers, tell your children not to do what I have done. Many of us
think the Pack will roll, and I know I'm one of them.

Very entertaining game. Let's do it again next year. ;-)

P.S. One more thing. I caught plenty of teasing from wearing Packer

I thought I'd mention some of the good stuff. (Although if I hear

Numbers drop but networks show no signs of backing off
The buzz on big-time sports: How high is up?
Whether it's player salaries or ticket prices, franchise values or
arena costs, conventional wisdom asserts everything is getting bigger,
if not better. Here's something different: The supply of big-time
sports' big product seems sluggish in key spots.
That product, of course, is eyeballs - measured by TV ratings. As
leagues sell their viewers to networks, which hawk them to
advertisers, Nielsen Media Research's famous ratings dictate the
quantity of eyeballs bought and sold each year in the TV industry's
$40 billion ad time business.
Compared to past Super Bowls, Fox's Bowl Sunday was No. 4 in total
viewers but No. 17 in household ratings. While raw viewing totals go
up as the U.S. population grows, ratings measure the percentage of
households tuned in - each rating point equals 1% of the USA's 97
million TV households. And Nielsen isn't exactly bullish on sports:
* From mid-September through December, overall household ratings for
all broadcast network weekend sports (airing noon-6 p.m. ET) fell
17% from 1995.
* The three broadcast networks covering the 1996 NFL season set, or
tied, modern-era TV lows - a cumulative 5% drop from 1995 that
continued into the playoffs. (On cable, NFL ratings dropped about
10%.)
* The New York Yankees-Atlanta Braves 1996 World Series pitted two
teams with presumed national followings. But ratings managed to
top only the 1990 and 1993 Series, matchups offering TV just one
U.S. home-team TV market.
* Baseball's All-Star Game, midsummer's biggest TV sports star, has
steadily lost about a third of its TV audience since 1988.
* While nearly all major college basketball games are on TV
somewhere, the NCAA men's tournament ratings have weakened,
dropping five consecutive years for the title game.
Paul Schulman, who annually buys about $175 million in network ad time
for advertisers, suggests sports slumps are just part of a bigger
picture: This season's network prime-time TV is down about 6%.
''Outside of the Olympics, nothing on network TV is going up.
Everybody talks about the prime-time success of NBC, the No. 1
network, but it's down 9% this season.''
Broadcast networks' problems go way back. Decades ago, CBS, NBC and
ABC had a virtual monopoly on viewers' eyeballs. Now, along with Fox,
they command just 62% of viewers tuned into prime time. Inroads,
arguably, haven't just come from cable and syndicated TV: About 90% of
households have VCRs, nearly 40% have home computers and 6% have
satellite dishes.
And, says Jon Mandel of Grey Advertising, life is busier: ''The days
of the humongous ratings are gone because of a cultural change. There
are too many other things to do. It used to be you didn't want to be
the only schmuck at work the next day who'd missed the game. Now you
may not even have time at work to talk about games.''
Besides, everybody might be watching different games. Outside the NFL,
the only sport carried almost exclusively by broadcast networks, dips
in regular-season ratings don't necessarily mean a sport is losing
popularity. The opposite might be true: With most games in major
sports now on TV somewhere, total fan bases might be split into
diminutive single-game ratings.
That's the case with college sports. ABC's college football ratings
last season dropped about 20% as CBS joined the existing pack of TV
outlets airing the sport. Regular-season TV college basketball is
wall-to-wall; there are 281 men's games just on ESPN/ESPN2. And
ESPN/ESPN2, among others, now devotes big time blocks to hype title
events they don't even carry - from 20 hours for the NCAA Final Four
to nearly 100 for the Super Bowl.
Which begs the question: Why don't those fans scattered across the TV
dial come together to produce a boffo box office for title games?
The networks themselves have a straightforward explanation: Nielsen is
off-base. They've long argued that out-of-home viewing, in places such
as bars and dorms, isn't fully measured. Says NBC executive Nick
Schiavone: ''People knew Nielsen had become sloppy. . . . What we
didn't want to believe is that they'd drop the ball. And they've
dropped this ball badly.''
Last fall, networks blasted Nielsen for modifications in how it
collects its data, especially changes in its 5,000-household survey
sample. CBS basketball analyst Billy Packer's blunt verdict: ''The
ratings don't relate to anything in modern day America.''
Nielsen says its ratings are as reliable as ever. But Fox executive
Giles Lundberg, hoping networks soon get an alternative ratings
service, says, ''We need more accuracy and consistency. Nielsen made
its changes under our protest. We're very concerned about the
methodology.''
But advertisers say they've heard the gripes before when networks get
disappointing ratings. Says ad man Mandel: ''My reaction to the
network complaints is something you couldn't print in a family
newspaper.''
And certainly big-event sports ratings haven't fallen across the
board: Three of the four highest-rated NBA Finals have come since
1994.
And ratings always come with asterisks. No matter who plays, World
Series ratings are likely to rise next year as it moves from No. 4
network Fox last year to NBC, where it won't have to face competition
from the No. 1 network. And there's always the X factor of sports
stars: Super Bowl-like ratings for Nancy Kerrigan-Tonya Harding
matchups put the average 1994 Winter Olympic prime-time rating above
every night of NBC's 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
But downward big-event ratings could change what you see, at least
around the margins. Early-round baseball playoffs and NCAA basketball
tournament coverage could migrate to cable TV. Media buyer Schulman
suggests moving college football's title game away from the other New
Year's bowls to the weekend before the Super Bowl could boost ratings
by more than 30%.
But sports such as the NFL, which will negotiate new TV deals late
this year, might not have much to worry about: Top sports events
remain a premier TV vehicle for advertisers to reach 18- to
49-year-old eyeballs, especially male eyeballs. They set broadcast
networks apart from the burgeoning TV pack. That's why Fox went after
the NFL in 1993, raising total NFL TV rights fees 20%, even after the
other networks collectively lost at least $200 million the previous
season.
Networks know even tepid sports ratings stand out amidst today's
fragmented TV audiences: CBS' college football and basketball title
games still produced CBS' two highest ratings last year. Says CBS
Sports President Sean McManus: ''Audiences for high quality sports
events have reached their saturation level. But I know instinctively
that the marketplace's appetite for sports grows every year. Put me
down as concerned but not worried.''

| Household rating may effectively measure advertising attractiveness but
don't necessarily measure demand. The ppv potential for yesterday's
game was enormous and could be combined with the advertiser revenue to
totally blow the socks off of all cap economics in one blow.

| It's almost a foregone conclusion that the SuperBowl will eventually go
to PPV. I think what the rating number show is a diminishing return for
the current format.
Granted the economics haven't peaked but it appears that the viewership
has. Given that the point of ads are to reach people, somewhere in the
near future those paying out the big bucks might wanna rethink this plan.

The fact that the Packers and the Patriots shared the same first two
letters and that the Packers are frequently referred to as the Pack and
the Patriots as the Pats made it very difficult both on Bourbon Street
and in the stadium on Sunday to know which team was being cheered for
when cheers came from a distance. In general there were a lot more
Cheeseheads both on the streets and in the stands than there were Pats
fans.
Packer Fans are great fans and root for their team in a positive way.
They didn't make it uncomfortable for the Patriots minority.
