If they hold the 2008 olympics in Boston, should we still think of
them as the Atlanta olympics? After all, the olympics were in
Atlanta before moving to Boston.

Well they seem to have resisted changing the name of the event from Olympics
to StoneMountinx even though Mount Olympus is not in Atlanta. Add to that
Greece always leads the parade of athletes at opening ceremonies even though
they don't hold the Olympics there very often. Speaking of opening ceremonies,
one of the big events was a tribute to the Ancient Olympics in Greece.
Funny, even though they don't hold the Olympics in Greece any more they
seem to remember their roots.

Which swimming competition is she likely to do best in terms of stroke and
distance?

Well my affirmation of this as the worst Olympics ever was confirmed this
weekend. I took the kids to the DI to see Twister and Independence Day. ID has
to be the hokiest blockbuster movie I seen recently. Of course my 11 year
liked it and stayed up for the whole thing. I really though Bill Pullman
was making progress especially with his work in Casper but with this clunker
he blew more than a few head gaskets.........

| According to the Boston Globe the IOC now seems to be saying that they were
unhappy with Atlanta because of the corporate involvement in the Olympics. In
the future they will insist on public funding rather than private funding to
avoid commercialism. They pointed to Sydney which will consolidate their
Olympics into two areas both publicly funded.
The Globe said that this pretty much wipes out any chance of Boston hosting
the 2008 Olympics since getting a guarantee of public funding for the large
stadiums needed was almost impossible.
Meanwhile the list of cities in the running for 2004 has Cape Town South
Africa at the head of the list along with Rome and Athens and several others.
If South Africa gets the Olympics it will be the 1st time the Olympics was
held anywhere on the African continent. They will make their selection in
about a year.
The U.S. is scheduled to hold the 2002 Olympics in Utah but it's not clear if
the IOC will attempt to limit private funding. Short of taking the Olympics
away from Utah it's not clear there is anything they can do about it.

The IOC are a bunch of hypocrites. Any money flowing into their
pockets, is good money, into anyone else's, that's bad, bad...

I also get the feeling that this whole issue of public versus private funding
is a lot more political than anything else. In fact they sometimes seem to be
paying lip service to those against private funding while winking at things
like cities who come up with private funding or the participation of
professional athletes in amateur events.
Must take one heck of a load of political talent to hold the job as head
of the IOC.

| Maybe I'm stupid,
But I just don't get the IOC's stance on this. Basically to land
the Olympics, a city has to bribe the IOC. The biggest briber wins.
Yeah, yeah I know, it's not outright "bribing", but the cities that
give the IOC members the best "gifts", trips and other perks have quite
often been the winner in the selection.
So the IOC is willing to take in the corporate money to grant the
sites (where do you think Atlanta got their money from? Hello
Coca-Cola!), then they want private funding and the associated
corporate tie ins out of it?
Sounds like a good way to tick off the people who are lining your
pocket and might just stop doing so in the future....

| It sounds like IOC is your typical reactionary type of organization.
They make a pile of money using the Atlanta formula (Coke, etc. gets to
pay big). Then ever one starts bad mouthing 'em for being to commercial.
So now they wanna go back to the old way which is the cities gouge the
taxpayers big time and pay off the IOC with these moneys.

It only makes sense that Juan the Fascist doesn't want private money
involved in the Olympics. It makes too much sense, and shows the so
called "olympic ideal" that he likes to brag that he sticks to, people
working together to reach a common goal.
The clown's a hypocrite, if he held to his ideals the games would have
been in Athens and not Atlanta. Although ~100 people vote on where
the games will be held, you know he has a huge influence.
