| Marty, wish you had spent more time discussing the women's volleyball.
MSU had a *really* tough squad this year, including the best freshman in the
country.
Don't know how the women's final came out (or will come out) - good luck to
Nebraska. They've been knocking on the door for quite some time, and Texas
has already won a couple of championships in the past.

I think Texas has only one championship. Nebraska's win on Sat made it only
the 2nd time a team East of the Rockies has won. Nebraska should be thanking
Mich St for taking out Hawaii, though.

| Man, it shore sounds like them Huskers are taking them Gators lightly.
I guess they're so confident that they'll win Jan 2 that they have time
to field a woman's volleyball team. I guess the nexted thing we'll here
is that the team has a rap video out.
BTW, do the woman volleyball players beat up on their boyfriends?

Mike, I don't think Pope has any eligibility left at the college level.
Besides, I don't see how he can practice, prepare and play for the
Niners at the Falcons on Sunday and then play 2 days later in the Fiesta
Bowl.
I mean, the Atlanta game may be for home field advantage. Besides, who'd
he play for?

Yup, just one NCAA. They won the AIAW the one year that both organizations
had tournaments. There's a good article on it in Volleyball magazine.
I'm glad the championship trophy came east of the Rockies.
On the men's side a year or two ago, Penn State beat UCLA for the championship.
This year, when UCLA won in a rematch, their coach said that the championship
was "back where it belongs".
So congrats to the Husker women!
I don't know who Mich St loses after this year, but they were tough. I was
home sick one day and watched a Big 10 match on ESPN (ESPN2 feed) where they
just *dope-slapped* Illinois - and Illinois was a top 20 team at the time!
I was adding up - at one point they had outscored them 62-18.

Roland,
You get Volleyball Monthly?? wow! It's not too unusual to see a top 5 team
slap around a lower tier top 20 team, as there is usually a big disparity
bgetween the haves and have nots.

I belong to the local volleyball organization - they had an offer of 3 free
issues if you subscribe.
Don't be amazed - it's not like I obsess on it or anything. I'm not near the
volleyball god that sometime SPROTS:: contributor Tom (SPIKED::) Sweeney is.

My Mens team won the USVBA SW Region A's last year, and we just started this
weekend on the '96 season. But we is very old. Learned that lasted year
when I found myself checking out the mother of one of the players on the
other team. That set me back a bit.

I don't think I've ever seen an "A" in person. I don't even watch "A"
tournaments because I'd just get depressed.
The organization for our area is called Yankee - the aforementioned Tom
Sweeney is one of the officers. My team lost in the Yankee C- finals
this past year, which wasn't bad considering that most of us had never played
together prior to the tournament. I have yet to play Yankee this year - have
only played in one of the local Digital leagues.

I played in the Yankee when it first started, back in the '70's. That makes
me sound old, too. We were gonna try to make it to Nationals last year, when
they were in Holyoke, but it was just real bad timing for a lot of people, me
included.

I wrote in here a couple times about the sister of one of the people I play
with who was Academic AA at ASU and is on the wimmens tour. Well, TTom, she
recently dumped her old boyfriend (Mark McGwire) for a new one, Marty
McSorley. She doesn't know anything about hockey (native Arizonan) so she
asked her b-i-l and I what kind of player he was. When we simultaneously
said "He's a goon" she wasn't very pleased.

You're right, but things being what they are, she might be better off.
He probably takes all his anger out on the ice.

Glove had a short history of volleyball last week, another NewEngland

good old days.
What's the etiquette on power slams in these mixed leagues?

RE: ediquette
It depends on the level. When you get to the B level, it is just as
though everyone was the same gender. And speaking as someone who has
"tried" to block the B level Women, don't worry about it.
On the flip side, at the C level there are some general guidelines, but
you won't get penalized otherwise. First, you don't block a C level
woman (unless you go up backwards, ie blind to where the ball is).
Second, it is considered bad taste to spike the ball into C level
players that aren't capable of digging it out. However, the easiest
thing to remember is if YOU are capable of doing these things, what are
you doing playing at the C level.

I don't know that I'd go as far as to say *that*.
At least in my experience in the Digital co-ed league out here (which is more
or less a C/C- league) I'd say it's more like "don't crush the ball at someone
incapable of defending themselves".
> However, the easiest
> thing to remember is if YOU are capable of doing these things, what are

If you're at C level and you're doing these things, you won't be at C level
for long...
Actually the discussion of levels is interesting. As I understand it, a B in
one rating system is not necessarily a B in another system. Yankee rates
players from A through D (D = absolute beginner). I'm currently a C-. I saw
an ad for a summer outdoor tournament where the levels were:
Open A B BB
I immediately figured that I was outclassed, but was told afterwards that I'm
probably a BB. Who knew?
So I have no concrete idea as to how USVBA rating is to Yankee rating is to
????
Bill Breen, did you (tm) "vrai mod"? I like it, especially considering that
you're a "faux mod"...
