223.0. "Arsenal beaten in Euro Cup Final" by AMIS::STRAGE (David STRAGE @GEO) Thu May 11 1995 06:50

European Cup Winners Cup Final (in Paris)

Arsenal 1 Real Zaragosa 2 (after extra time)

Arsenal were beaten by a last second desperation goal from
ex-Tottenham player Nayim. It was a depressing night for the
Arsenal faithful, and a glorious victory for the Spanish team.

My comiserations to the Arsenal fans in Noteland, I'll print a
short match report for anyone interested but it will be a painful
experience having to relive the game!!

By "desperation goal", probably you mean a pretty impressive one,
after a bunch of opportunities missed by Zaragoza ;-)

Well, despite being a Liverpool fan, I was pulling hard for the Gunners.

I'd rather have seen the English win it than anyone else....

223.3It was desparate...AMIS::STRAGEDavid STRAGE @GEOThu May 11 1995 13:139
    Louis,

I don't begrudge RZ their vistory last night (much), but a goal
scored from 50yds out in the final seconds of a European Cup Final must
    be classified as desparation!!

Would Nayim have tried it mid-way through the first half??

    PJ (still stunned)

Well David, I recall four or five similar goals only this season, some
of them even further away. Arsenal's goalkeeper (like many English
ones) is known to play quite advanced, so the choice was not too bad.

If you mean that Nayim had to make a risky try (anyway he had little
choice since there were players off-side), I fully agree. I would say
that RZ deserved that bit of luck :-)
