The World Wide Web (WWW) is just that, a world-wide web.
To access it, you need browser software. There are a few different types,
one of which is a kinda-sorta portable one called Mosaic. It runs on VMS,
Ultrix (not sure about OSF) and PCs.
Not sure of where you can get the kits though......

Okay, I hadn't thrown that one on my system yet to check out so I didn't
want to mention it.
If you're looking for something for VMS, grab the WWW011.A kit out there.

201.5 | You need TCP/IP (UCX) and a browser. | DSSDEV::AXEL | Mike Axel ZK2-2O04 DTN 381-2156 | Wed Nov 30 1994 15:47 | 9 |
| World wide web requires TCP/IP for access (UCX on VMS systems). If
you're on a system with TCP/IP, then you can use Mosaic for multi-
media browsing (graphics, sound) or Lynx for character cell browsing.
SatchelSports is character based except for some page headers, so
Lynx is sufficient.

| Sportszone is having a tournament to see if'n they can figger out which
is the most popular sprots movie.
They want you to vote in head-to-head matchups. Here's the lineup:
July 9th-- Bull Durham vs. Cobb
July 11th- The Natural vs. Little Big League
July 13th- Field Of Dreams vs. Mr. Baseball
July 15th- Bang the Drum Slowly vs. Angels in the Outfield
July 17th- Bad News Bears vs. Rookie of the Year
July 19th- Eight Men Out vs. Pride of the Yankees
July 21st- Bingo Long & the Traveling All-Stars vs. A League of Their Own
July 23rd- Major League vs. The Sandlot
My take on this is that there aint no better'n _Bull Durham_. However,
you can't have a complete list of the bestest sprots movies without some
additions to their list. I'd have to put _Slap Shot_ way up there.
Any other additions or deletions?

I'm not sure what the limits of "sprots" movies is. Is _Brewster's

the story.
Also, another one not on the list is _Fear Strikes Out_ with Psycho Tony

201.34 | AOL :== SOL | HBAHBA::HAAS | Come on down, Gilbert Brown | Tue Feb 11 1997 12:44 | 35 |
| Wail, I finally got a collection of pieces working at home that allows me
to dial into and onto the great information highway in the sky.
So I decided give it a try.
I installed one of them 50 free hours things from America On Line. It was
easy, straightforward, followed their documentated instructions and
pretty much useless.
I now know what all them AOL users are complaining about. Get a beer, cup
of coffee, good book or something cause it's gonna take a while to
connect. The software is pretty user friendly in that in already has a
secondary phone number to call which is also inaccessible.
Then you finally get on. I'm not too big on layering so I went directly
to the ol' World Wide Web globe icon. Here's where the fun begins.
Apparently, the bandwidth problems of connecting are small potatoes
compared to the bandwidth problems of accessing the internet. I'd
recommend against trying to surf the net after about 6. Virtually ever
request timed out.
It took 4 or 5 requests to even bring up Altavista. A couple of more
attempts to effect a search. Few of the links worked. Almost all timed
out.
Excite was even worse. You couldn't even tell if'n it had been had. In
all the time I put in there, I was able to retrieve one search result
from which no links worked.
A T1 between me and AOL wouldn't help out in these cases.
I tossed and de-installed after about a hour and a half.

It's got one of them big come-ons (access for as little as 9.95 a month or

Problem with those is that if you buy a big term to save money, then hate what

| I was looking into EROL's myself but when I looked into it I found more than
a few people had complaints with it. It appeared from the complaints that it
wasn't exactly the most user friendly software or user friendly company. Support
sucks, it tends to gag on big jobs and saving work in progress is bad and
unrecoverable if mistakes are made. They also just had a problem which I'm
not sure I understand where they had to remove everyone "shell accounts" (?)
for email because someone send unsuitable material to everyone on the system
(around 150K folks).
I'm looking for another service myself as I'm not all that happy with AOL
especially when they told me there was no way to change my password on the
master account.
I'm going to try MSN as soon as my 50 free hours run out on AOL...
Anyone else got a different service than those already mentioned and how do
they like it? pros and cons etc......

Or you can wait just a bit longer (those of you suffering with AOL).
Let me explain what happened with AOL. They installed a ton of ATM
hardware for their network just before their "unlimited" service offer
was released. After releasing the offer, they discovered what those of
us in networks already know, ATM just doesn't work over voice grade
lines with lots of traffic.
As a result, they just signed a contract (well technically they were
going to sign it last night, don't know if they did) with Digital and
purchased 50 GIGAswitch/FDDIs because the FDDI technology is stable.
With an agreement to purchase 10/month for at least a year. Basically,
they are replacing their ATM stuff with our GIGAswitch/FDDI boxes.
Once that transfer is complete, AOL access should be back to what it
was before.
