One of my teams (Pats) is perpetually out of it, and I don't
feel inclined to hop aboard any bandwagon. My only regret is
that it appears the Vikes are better thised year than my
other team, the Packers.

if Forman hadn't fumbled at the 2 the Vikes might not be keeping company
with the Bills and Broncos. I can't remember a play that changed a game
momentum more than that one. Of course the sting of loosing a 200 dollar
bet that day might have something to do with the vividness of the memory...

I like Dennis Green. He calls it like it is and seems to get a great deal
 out of his talent.

I wouldn't jump on their bandwagon but I certainly wouldn't mind them
knocking off the Cowboys or Niners in the playoffs.......

Well I for one just want to see Minny/Philly compete with SF/DALLAS
with all the Dallas(Which I do like but dont want to see Dal VS Buf
again) and SF who I dont like. For either of them to compete I think
they need HFA. Right now Philly/Minny/SF/Dallas all have 7 wins :-)

Philly beat SF (But would need to take the divisioN) and Minny plays
    SF later in the year...

Moon in Minny could be the last piece to the Vikings Puzzel.. I for one
would love to see a Philly @ Minny NFC Title Game :-)

I guess as Vikes fans, we'd then want SF to knock off Dallas next week,
then beat SF in the last game to hopefully gain HFA throughout.

Whatever, but it'd be nice to get a bye in the first round and then
    host one game anyway.

The BYE week is very important as well as HFA, thats what you work for
all season long (Well I think making the playoffs is everyones goal
    the rest is gravy).

I still think Philly has a shot at dallas for the division. If they
can beat Cleveland (AT Philly) this weekend there's a good change that
SF may beat dallas(THERE HURTING BIG TIME) so it will be up too there
next matchup (dallas won the first one).

Of course If Dallas Beats SF and then Philly again there hands down
the best team and deserve another shot at the SuperBowl...

Good Luck Minny, dont fall asleep vs a team you should beat...

And then the Jets beat the Colts!!!! (HOW??!) Actually,
that was '68. The '67 Colts team sported an 11-0-2 record
and went into LA for their final regular season game. The
Rams were 10-1-2 with their only loss being to the Colts).
Rams won 34-7 and the Fearsome Foursome laid on Unitas all
day. The Pack went on to demolish the Rams in the playoffs
      28-7.

Speaking of Brownies in the championship games (I believe
the following was before the merger)...

In '69, they played the Vikings who crushed them. I remember
the Vikings having a broken play near the Brownie's endzone.
Joe Kapp just lowered his head and bulled into the endzone
knocking a linebacker OUT COLD. The only time I ever saw a
      QB knock out a linebacker.

Actually, I felt that the Vikings super bowl teams were not
in synch. By that I mean that when the defense was REAL good,
1969 team, they lacked a good QB. When they had a decent QB,
the defense was on the old side.
195.25Fran was for Fran and Fran's statsHBAHBA::HAASdingle lingoThu Dec 01 1994 16:3411
Minnesota never did understand that they were destined to NOT win the
super bowl because of that way lame Fran Tarkenton, the testimony to
accumulating statistics at the expense of team accomplishments. When it
came time for the big one, ol' Fran showed his mediocrity and complete
inability to win the big one.

I thought it was a nice touch that Tarkenton didn't make it into the hall
on his firsted year of eligibility. And icing on the cake was that Joe
Namath made in that year, his firsted chance.

Either that or their overall teams just weren't that good. I tend to
go with the latter. As the man said, Tarkenton wasn't around for the
first one, and the Vikes still got blown out. And as I recall in the
later ones, especially against the Steelers and Raiders, Tarkenton didn't
have a whole lot of time to worry about accumulating stats (and didn't)
because he was too busy picking himself off the turf. Meanwhile on the
other side of the line of scrimmage the likes of Larry Csonka and Franco
Harris were busy setting SB rushing records against the Vikes'
    undersized D-line.

I don't buy this. A team has to win big games to get to the Superbowl. What
about the Conference Championship game or even the Conference semi finals?

The reason the Vikings never beat those A.F.C. champions was partly because
the top A.F.C. teams were better then the top N.F.C. teams back then and partly
because of luck.

The history of sprots is riddled with teams that won the nexted to the
lasted game of the season. Fran surely had his share of these, just like
Elway and Kelly.

In THE BIG GAME, he led his team to losing scores of:

      VIII--Miami (AFC) 24, Minnesota (NFC) 7
        IX--Pittsburgh (AFC) 16, Minnesota (NFC) 6
        XI--Oakland (AFC) 32, Minnesota (NFC) 14

And let's not fergit that he was about as widely respected as Joe
Theisman. You know, the guy that broke his leg and none of his teammates
visited him in the hospital.

And when were the Purple People Eaters?

TTom
195.30HELIX::MAIEWSKIFri Dec 02 1994 13:1917
But what makes you think it was Trakenton's fault that they lost?

I see little difference between the pressure of a championship game versus
the pressure of games leading up to a championship, especially in a case like
the NFL where one loss and you are out.

On the other hand, look at those teams that beat him, VIII Miami, IX
Pittsburgh, XI Oakland. Those teams could beat anyone. In fact one year that
Miami team did beat everyone.

Maybe in basketball one guy can make that much of a difference but football
is a team sport. Sure the QB means a lot but he's not everything.

And in the case where they lost to Oakland 32-14, that looks like more of
a case where the defense lost rather than the offense failing to win.

> But what makes you think it was Trakenton's fault that they lost?

What I said was that he was mediocre QB who couldn't win the big one.

Saying it wasn't his fault that they lost is making my case for me. In
effect, you're saying that he was unable to lead the Vikings to a super
bowl win and that he was unable to best the defenses presented to him in
those games.

I agree. He couldn't get it done.

      re: last few

The main thing that stands out is that the Vikings didn't
score a whole lot of points. I don't remember the games,
but in a real coarse analysis, the QB is supposed to put
      points on the board.

As I wrote my reply stating the Vikes were out of synch, I
actually thought the same thing about Tarkenton; i.e. that
he really wasn't that great a QB. But, he was probably better
than Joe Kapp who really couldn't throw the ball all that well.

The defense was fairly young during the '69 team. It (especially
the line) was fairly aged by the 2nd super bowl.

Is nothing sacred? :-)

Fran made into the Hall so obviously made some kinda positive impression.
And I'm not one to say that the onliest thing that matters is winning the
Big One. I agree, for instance, that history will treat Marino well even
if'n he finishes without a ring.

However, I place Fran closer to Dan Fouts than Marino. Just look at the
way Marino is carrying the Fins thised year. And Fran probably had better
talent than Fouts did which possibly explains why he got a step closer
but still no cigar.

2 teams since the 16 game season went into affect went 18-1 including
the playoffs - 1985 Bears and one of the 49er teams. Bears only loss
was to Miami in week 13, 49ers lost early on in the season to the
