Watch out for Dehere (named after the Seton Hall-Clipper player). The

Normally in a raceing topic the thing to discuss or whatever goes on
here, it the races and the horses in those races.
I would like to ask that this topic be changed to EQUINE EVENTS instead
of horse racing.
I am active in Rodeo and Equine performance events.(Keep it clean boys)

| Well, there's not too much that the Chainsaw is afraid of. Well, yeah,
there are some things (like fire, fire, fire, fire.....SHUT UP Beavis!)
and I like horses, but I'm always worried that they're gonna step on my
feet.
For some reason, I've no worries whem I'm around cows (cows have wicked
ugly feet btw), but when I'm walking a horse or something, I have this
(probably) irrational fear that they're gonna stomp on my feet.
Now I don't know too much about horses. I like Clydesdales the best though.
No nonsense, big..... my kind of horse.....
I don't know anything about rodeo, but any sport where you can bleed is
fine by me. Those show jumping events are okay, but nobody bleeds, so
it's not as interesting.....

there's like some species of cow in front of the horse. I don't know if
it's a calf, an ox, or some jacked up dog with horns on it's haid, but
anyway, the cow trys to run one way, and the horse kind of scoots over
and blocks it off, and if it goes the other way, the guy makes the horse
go that way.
I'll bet that's murder on the guy's testicles, though, there in the saddle.

A good "Cuttin" horse is born with the instinct. All the rider must
do is lay the rein across the horses neck and it goes. With a little practice,
its a pleasure to watch them work the calf.

| Actually, cutting takes a lot of training. Like in any sport, the
athlete must train and condition for competition. The cutting horse
does have a certain ammount of inbred instinct but he still needs to be
trained to be ridden, guided and learn when to stop cutting. I have
ridden all levels of cutters and the finished horse is beauty in
motion. From on board and from the ground.
I believe equine events are a sport, if you have ever ridden a horse,
you know it takes more than just sitting there protecting your nuts to
do it competitivly.

Ah, that's just kind of an old SPORTS joke, that got started a long time
ago with MrT telling JD that running wasn't a sport, because all it was
was going "left right, left right" etc etc etc.
JD carried it to the next level in the motorsports note, saying that
motorsports aren't sports cause the vehicles do all the work.
Most of the rest of us in here are not so picky.....
I've ridden a horse a few times, but I always feel sorry for the horse.
I mean, I wouldn't wanna carry me around on my back, and asking the poor
horse to do it makes me feel bad.... But I did learn one thing:
As Michael J. Fox said in an interview about Back to the Future
III, "when you're riding a horse, don't wear boxers!"

Clydesdales are ridden. Most of the draft horses these days are no
longer used for what they were originally bred for. That means to keep
the breed popular they have to be a bit more versitile than before. I
have been to a few draft horse shows and seen some shown under saddle
in performance classes. They aren't too comfortable with the
suspension between foot falls but hey, some breeds are just that way.

Okay, you've got me. 99% of the time when I want to do an innuendo,
I do it with malice aforethought.
But I guess on this one, I made a_innuendo, and I didn't even know it.
Speaking of equestrian events, I've read that in the old days, like
the really, really, old days (like Alexander the Great old days) that
war horses back then were not fought upon.
The soldiers would ride their horse to the battle, and dismount, and
that the horses were trained to rear up and knock the doo-doo
out of enemy guys with their front feet.
Then the soldiers would get back on and ride home.
that's different, eh?

Goats are cool, huh-huh, huh-huh-huh....
On my way from my house to my folks' house, I got via what the locals
call "over the mountain". It's more commonly known as Rattlesnake Mountain,
and I can't remember the Indian name for it.
Anyway, it's over a dirt road through the woods, and the area is infested
with rattlers.
There's a little farm up there, called "Kongscut Pasture", and the woman
who lives there is a professional photographer, I believe, and her husband
does all kinds of things. At any rate, they have a bunch o' animals
up there -- horses, mules, goats....
Last spring they had this little baby goat running around in the pasture.
It was, without a doubt, one of the cutest baby animals I've ever
seen. I even had my camera with me, but unfortunately, the baby goat
never was in a very good position for me to take pictures.
Brews, I'm very sorry your goat died. Your horse will get over it,

Jockey weight. Sort of.
I'm no 'spert, but I think that they all carry the same weight, and that
they add weight to whatt the jockey weighs.
I *think* I remember hearing it some place, but then again, you never know...

| Yes, they carry the same weight, but I believe that what typically happens
if the jockey and tack come in under the weight, they add weight to the
saddle or something like that.
Heard on the radio on Saturday night that most jocks to race here in the
US, usually have to maintaina personal weight of between 109 and 112...
Unreal.

I had the wife and son pointed to Rockingham but got outwitted by the
tandem and finally cancelled. So there came tg thundering down the
stretch to my moaning and whining and she said "Why didn't you tell me
you had a horse picked out!".
Admittedly my past derby record has been lousy so it wasn't that hard
to dissuade me from the trip. And I doubt that Tejano run would have
been in any of my combos.
So alls I won was sprots bragg'n rights

| Well in case anyone missed it Timber Country was scratched becasue of a
fever (and it was treated with bute which is illegal in n.y.). Thunder
Gultch then won and must have won the big triple crown bonus for his
bookmaker english owner.
It looks like there were no serious contenders other than the two Lucas
horses which is rare for triple crown races - perhaps if they knew tc
wouldn't run more would have entered. Pretty convenient for the tc
owner to have his main rival scratched.

My thoughts EXACTLY! Triple Crown == WWF! Horses on
steroids! Film at 11! :-) :-)
If I'm not mistaken, Thunder Gulch won the Derby and
Timber Country won the Preakness, so how would any
triple crown bonus be awarded? (The only possibility
is for Lukas (sp?), who I believe was the trainer for
both, but perhaps not the owner.)
Oh hell, who cares? CONSPIRACY!
Bill, I would love to hear your take on the Houston
3-0 Finals lead over in the NBA note. Perhaps an
"anti-conspiracy" conspiracy?

Here's a couple: with Michael Jordan having one more year of marketing in
him, they don't want Shaq to win a ring which might reduce all of the
money everyone makes with Jordan;
or, Jordan comes back to unseat two-time defending champ Houston.

| I believe the triple crown bonus is for most points in the three races
and the two Lucas horses were tied. There's a bonus for winning all
three. I only state that Lucas was in an excellent position to do
something here to benefit the one owner. I might mention that in the
derby Gulch paid an astronomical sum because the horse ran so poorly in
the jim beam and Lucas appeared to discount him.
On the other hand there is Wayne Lucas' supreme integrity and high
esteem he is held in by the horse racing community putting him as above
Raproach as say Bob Cousy.

| I don't know if any of you saw it, but the Larry King interview last night
with Christopher Reeve was pretty good viewing.
Reeve has such a bright outlook and attitude, and it was interesting hearing
him talk about being a "high quad" -- C1/C2 fracture, and the way it affected
his life and stuff.
Sometimes you know a person by the work they do. Sometimes you know a person
by the good works they do. And then sometimes you learn about what the true
person is like when they encounter tremendous adversity, and the the true
person inside begins to shine through. That's kind of what happened last
night.

138.89 | and a mint julep to go | HBAHBA::HAAS | floor,chair,couch,bed | Tue Apr 30 1996 12:31 | 54 |
| Wail, it's about Kentucky Derby time.
So whilest you contemplate who your gonna lose money on thised year,
here's the official (I think) recipe for a genuine Mint Julep.
ESPNET SportsZone | Horse Racing
IF YOU CAN'T BE THERE, YOU CAN STILL DRINK LIKE YOU ARE
By Ed McNamara
Special to ESPNET SportsZone
_________________________________________________________________
What you need
_________________________________________________________________
1 cup water
2 cups sugar
6 mint sprigs
Bourbon
Crushed ice
Tradition can be wonderful, but at times it just makes you wonder.
The mint julep, the official drink of the Kentucky Derby, sounds a lot
better than it tastes. For those of you who will be partying at home
as you watch your horses finish up the track in America's Race, here's
the recipe:
Start by making simple syrup, which consists of a cup of cold water,
two cups of sugar and six mint sprigs. Boil the sugar and water for
five minutes, let it cool and add the mint leaves. Let the syrup
"brew" for 12 hours, then stir and strain to remove the mint. Mix two
jiggers of bourbon with one jigger of simple syrup and pour into a
glass filled with crushed ice. Stir and stick in a fresh mint sprig
(it resembles a hardy weed). Think of it as a snowcone that gives you
a buzz.
There's no accounting for taste, especially when such a second-rate
concoction is so popular that it's almost heretical to criticize it.
To a connoisseur of good bourbon, it seems like a sinful waste, and to
this former bartender, the mint sprig is extremely optional.
The best that can be said of the mint julep is the more of them you
drink, the better you like them. During Derby week approximately
90,000 will be sold, at $5.25 a pop, at Churchill Downs, and as a
bonus revelers get to keep the attractive souvenir glass as a memento
of the day they spent walking around in a haze beneath the twin
spires.
Ah, but you have to go with the flow to get with the spirit of the
experience. Life is short; play hard. Just drink it.

Post
1929 Clyde Van Dusen 20
1982 Gato Del Sol 18
1984 Swale 15
1995 Thunder Gulch 16
Quick facts:
The last horse to win the Kentucky Derby wire-to-wire was Winning
Colors in 1988.
The oldest winning trainer was Charlie Whittingham (76) with Sunday
Silence in 1989.
The only man to win the Derby as a trainer and as a jockey was John
Longden (Count Fleet 1943 as jockey, Majestic Prince in 1969 as
trainer).
Only four men have ridden back-to-back Derby winners: Eddie
Delahoussaye, Ron Turcotte, Jimmy Winkfield and Isaac Murphy. Gary
Stevens will try to turn that trick this year.
Only four female jockeys have ever ridden in the Derby. Patricia
Cooksey (11th in 1984), Diane Crump (15th-1970), Andrea Seefeldt
(16th-1991) and Julie Krone (14th-1992 and 11th-1995) have the unique
honor.
The oldest winning owner was Francis Genter at age 92 (in 1990 with
Unbridled).
The oldest jockey to win the Derby was Bill Shoemaker (age 54, aboard
Ferdinand in 1986).
Three fillies have won the Derby: Regret (1915), Genuine Risk (1980)
and Winning Colors (1988).
Entering this year, D. Wayne Lukas has entered 26 horses in the Derby
and only five have ended in the money (two wins, three third-place
