I think that DrM has fallen off the wagon and is badly in need of a
SPORTS fix, because I believe I heard him on EEI this morning giving
his "greatest sports moments" as Doug Williams lighting up the Donks,
the Lakers beating the Celtics, blah blah blah. No mention was made of
any Houston teams or Wilt Chamberlain...

| While it's true that the Cubs' 10 game losing streak in early September
made things easier for the Mets, let's not forget the following:
From early August thru the world series the Mets were 45-12. The came
from 9 back to finish 8 ahead. In the final month there were so many
memorable moments:
1) The black cat walking by the Cub's dugout before the beginning
of the crucial 2 game series at Shea. The Mets swept.
2) Getting no-hit by Bob Moose of the Pirates.
3) Winning each half of a doubleheader against a tough hitting Pirates
team at Pittsburgh with the pitchers driving in the winning run of each
game.
4) Beating Steve Carlton 4-3 on a pair of two-run homers by Ron Swoboda
despite Carlton setting a then major league record with 19 strikeouts.
5) Clinching the division against the defending champion Cardinals.
6) Posting winning streaks of 10 and 9 games in Spetember
alone,including a 44 inning shutout streak.
And the post season:
Sweeping the Braves in the playoffs despite a memorable performance by
Henry Aaron who homered in each game
And dusting off the heavily favored Orioles, losing the opener but
winning 4 straight.
Game 2 - .210 hitter Al Weis drives in the winner.
Game 3 - 21 year old Nolan Ryan combines with Gary Gentry on a 5-0
shutout, largely abetted by Tommy Agee, who made two of the finest
catches in world series history.
Game 4 - After Ron Swoboda makes an incredible diving catch in the 9th
inning to keep the game tied, the Mets win in the 10th on a sacrifice
bunt that hits the runner who is said to have gone out of the baseline.
Game 5 - Donn Clendennon and Al Weis lead the Mets back from a 3-0
deficit as Jerry Koosman wins his second game 5-3.
Remember. All this from a team that had never had a winning record.
This was baseball at its vintage. No free agents, post season games
during the day.

Oh, I think that in recent years the young fans of the Reds, Twins,
Blue Jays and Braves have accumulated plenty of good memories. Kids
have a way of seeing what's relevant and what's not and blocking the
rest of it out. It's the adults who do most of the complaining, and
did so when we were kids. When I grew up following baseball in this
period, to my disinterested dad it just wasn't the same as in the
heyday of the Pirates in the late 50's/early 60's. To his dad and

Baseball has a serious problem with fan identification and unless

I agree, I was just using some interesting baseball teams as an
example; the love doesn't have to be for baseball. Basketball and
football players aren't playing for free, and it's not the money that
turns off kids. If it were, Jordan and the Shaq would be getting hurt

| 1. Canada defeats USSR in deciding game of 72 Summit Series in Moscow.
2. Gretzky to Lemieux for Canada Cup clinching goal in 87.
3. Ben Johnson running 9.79 over 100 metres with plenty of gas
to spare. Major disappointment after Steroid scandal breaks..
but hey, most track and fielders are on one thing or another
anyway. Doubt if we'll ever see a human run as fast as johnson
did ( he would have beat 9.79 if he did not slow up and raise his
arm in victory ) clean.

as does anyone who dopes.
Just too bad FloJo got away with it.

| Here are, in my opinion, the 3 greatest moments in sports:
1. Muhammed Ali winning the title the first time.
2. Muhammed Ali winning the title the second time.
3. Muhammed Ali winning the title for the third time.
In other words, the 3 greatest moments were by the "greatest of al
