We have a lake out here (its actually two) called Twin Lakes. It
sets at the bottom of Independence Pass at around 10K feet. This lake is
known for its Lake Trout aka Mackinaw which come in various sizes. The
state law says you have to throw'm back if their under 20 inches.
A friend of mine that works at CX01 has a buddy that works for the Dept
of Wildlife. For some reason they go up to Twin each year and seine the lake
to check for what species and quanity made it through the winter.
Well each year they've been pulling what is now a 26 lb Mack out
of the nets. Now a 26 lb Mack is a monster, havin caught 25 in. Sow rainbows
full of eggs that only weight 7 or 8 lb's in the spring.
Since hearing of this giant, I have spent several summer days down-rigging
the biggest lure's I have hoping for a tug from this hugh mackinaw.
The lake has great Rainbow fishing year round. We go up in the winter
and drop Salmon eggs on #12's and catch fish from sun up till sun down. They
have a steam power generating plant and they let the hot water pass into the
lake melting the Ice for several 100 ft down the beach.
The smaller (up to 16in) Rainbow's tend to hang out in this area, and
are veracious when given the chance to snack on these eggs. I've caught 50 on
a good day, only keeping those a pound or better, limits 8 Catch so dang many
you hardly have time to take a pull off that ole Jacky D you got stuck there
in the snow.

I grew up in Clinton, Mass near the Wachusett Resevoir,
one of the prettiest places in Central Mass. The state
record brown trout 19 lbs 8 oz came out of the Wachusett
back in the '60's. That record will never be broken because
they introduced lakers into Wachusett and they're now the
dominant salmonids. For awhile the state record laker was
a Wachusett fish, a 22 pound 10 ouncer, but that record was
broken by a fish out of the bigger Quabbin Resevoir. That
fish weighed in at 26 lbs 9 oz. The thing about Wachusett
is that no boats are allowed only shore fishing and the
fishing season is from April 1st til November 1st so there's
no telling how big the fish are in there. Supposedly, they've
tagged a 37 pounder but that could just be talk. Wachusett
also has great smallmouth fishing. A buddy of mine has a 7 lb
4 oz'er on his wall. I've caught a few smallies in the 5 pound
range. They're a blast on my 4'10" ultralite rod with 4 pound
test. I used to do the Salmon River in upstate NY during the
run but even catching them 30-40 pounders ain't as much fun as
the fishing right in my own backyard at Wachusett.

Lasted summer, in the brackish, algea filled water of Lake Ripple in
Grafton, I managed to catch 4 porges. Each one was almost 6" long!
Used live worms too. Dug 'em up myself!
I remain,

Clinton I remember Clinton, I spent some of my miss spent youth
around Clintion, friend of mine married a chick from there. Linda (large
chicharones) ?? we used to go over to Clinton on Sundays to get booze.
Only place around that would sell, out the back door.
We used to go to another place east of Ashburnham/Winchendon,
Lake Manonack?? or something like that. Never caught a damn thing
there, of course what we were looking for only smelled like fish!!!!.
And then there was the Lakeside near Whalom Park? We used to party big time
there after leaving the Mohawk.

The Broncos put up more of a fight in their Super Bowl appearances
than a carp does on the end of a fishing line. They're big but they
might as well be on quaaludes.
>> Were is Wachusset located?
Wachusett is bordered by Clinton, Boylston, West Boylston and
Sterling. They've introduced landlock salmon into the resevoir
in the past couple of years and it looks like they're taking to
the lake although nothing beigger than a few pounds has been
caught.

In upstate NY they do at the hatchery. The salmon follow the
natural river all the way up to the the hatchery where there
is a small man made stream that goes right up to the building
itself.

| Well, over the past bunch of years the Connecticut River has cleaned up
enough that salmon are coming back there too.
Bluefish fight pretty well, especially if they are smaller.
Fresh water, I like bass for fighting...small mouth or large mouth,
doesn't matter.
Sometimes I fish in the ponds up on the golf course next to my house.
They have a lot of bass in there, and some catfish. I always throw
everything I catch back.....

No thanks on the Carp, they have them on the endangered species list out here.
If I'm unlucky enough to catch one I just throw'm as far from the water as
possible.
They have kokanee?? salmon here in several of the lakes round or near
the Springs. A snagging season run for the month of October with a limit of 40.
They (along with the trout) spawn up one of the natural rivers or streams.
the salmon will hit a nightcrawler hanging off of some pop gear most of the
summer up at place called Eleven Mile res. about 40 miles west of CXO. It
sets at 9.5-10k feet in an area known as South Park

I've been hearing this for years. I hope they make a serious comeback in
my lifetime. I fish the Connecticut near South Hadley, Mass during shad
season but I'd much rather do it for Atlantic Salmon which many consider
to be the king of gamefish.
>> Fresh water, I like bass for fighting...small mouth or large mouth,

No comparison. Smallies have more stamina and are more acrobatic. Large-
mouth give you about two minutes of fight and then roll over like logs.

Fried pork chips!? Sorry, don't know her.
All the fishing I did in my youth was done at Wachusett as well as Lake
Winnekeag in Ashburnham where my grandparents owned waterfront
property. Winnekeag had some *LARGE* pike in it!

About 15 years ago, when I was working for the Town of Glastonbury during
my summers off from school, we received a bulletin that there was a bounty
on Salmon, alive or dead. The DEP wanted to see how they were fairing
in the river.
Since that time, they've made a stronger and stronger comeback each
year, I believe.
While I wouldn't swim in the Ct River, since I was a young boy it has
gotten progressively cleaner...

Agreed. I can catch both.
To me, what I like best about fishing is the peace and solitude. I honestly
don't care if I catch anything or not. 8^)

| Did anyone see the report on CBS Sunday Morning on Ice Fishing?
I didn't exactly catch where it was (I'd guess Minnesota), but these
folks like build a little city on the lake -- they have roads that they
drive on on the ice, speed limits, even a tow truck!
They have the little cabins with a whole bunch of creature comforts,
including TV, with holes in the floor, where they drill through the
ice and fish.
Meantime, they play cards or watch TV or read and stuff.
I've never seen anything at all like it.......
When they go ice fishing on the pond/lake next to my house, they take
a little stool, a saw, an ice fishing rig, and that's it.....8^)
Guess we just don't know how to do it in CT.....

This probably belongs in the legalese note but it is sort of a fishing
question.
At the resevoir in Boylston, you're only allowed to fish on shore
'cause they don't allow boat or stuff.
Question. In da winter, when da water freezes and gets real solid, are
ya allowed to walk on the frozen lake and fish in da middle or stuff?
I don't get up that way too much any more so I can't say I've seen
the answer to my question.
I remain,
