I'm in two tenpin leagues and use a 15.78 pound ball. I've bowled a
higher score with "the other" hand in tenpin than my high in candlepin.
Tenpin is for people who drink 2 pitchers by the hanging frame, smoke
enough so you can't see the lights, and drive a Gremlin.
The only reason I bowl it is because there is no REAL bowling in
Colorado.

Yabbut all this college bowl talk made me remember something I
heard over the weekend and I'm sure that this'll lacquer up yer woodies
when ya find this out!
Sometime over the weekend, out west someplace, some dude made
bowling history by bowling three consecutive 300 games, in a sanctioned
event.
I find it interesting that nobody ever before had a 900 series
total. Guy musta been "in the zone" eh?
I remain,
wondering if he does any "real" sports?

I'm not John, and I don't even play him on TV, but I sit next to him.....

Candlepin, by its very nature, is imperfect and thus no one has

| Any insomniacs watch the women's bowling last night? They use that
format where low seed plays * - 1, -2 etc. Number 5 was cruisin and
then #3 only needed a seven on top of her strike (which she got) to win
and threw a six.
Finally vs #1 she's cruising again and this very attractive (sorry)
woman came from way back with 5 strikes to close and #5 needed a double
and couldn't do it.
the reason I mention this is that this is how I think bc is gonna beat
harvard tonight, sneak up on em at the end.

thought that the match had ended in a tie, only to find out they'd

One thing I like about bowling is when the losing bowler takes his/her
balls and leaves after logging the 'L'. Kinda poetic, having to clean
up after yourself after losing ....

surfboard at the ready. The woman commentator must have had some kind
of mental formula in her head she'd been using because she had it right
(on the 6 losing) but let herself be talked out of it.
I never cease to be amazed at how in a bowling league with 5 per side
some guys can immeadiately note that "Charlie needs a double with an 8
to tie".
And as it turned out the BC victory did go the way of the bowling with
Harvard not building a big enough lead and bc getting into the overtime
and then slipping in the goal.

It really isn't that difficult. You learned the mechanics on how to do
this in elementary school (addition) The only difficult part to
remember is the rules of scoring in bowling (2 balls on a strike, 1 on
a spare which is one reason why Candlepin is better...because you
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS have 3 balls count per frame for your score).
So a little practice and you will find that you can do it also.

I stole that one from Andleman, one of the few things he's ever said

I did hit a 189 my first time bowling but when I tried again 20 years

re. addition. I don't think the "pros" use simply grade school style
addition.
I think rather that they have some tricks such as cancelling strikes or
whatever.

Yabbut snot true Hize! If'n ya throw (drop) a straight ball from

get some pretty good pin action and high scores. It ain't a curve

I have had this note running in Sprots for 8 years now. The argument

tight schedules have dropped my average to a depressing 112, but
candlepin blwoing still beats sitting around the t.v. at night.
And just for laughs, there is a new cable t.v. bowling show, debuting
in a couple of weeks. It will be covered by 5 cable companies in
central Mass (Clinton cable is driving this). It is a bowling show
where the contestants can't have over a 115 average. I missed being on
the inaugural show by 12 pins lasted Friday night. My face will shine

| I don't know all the details except that the shows are taped at Harvard
Lanes (not Mass Bowling Assoc sanctioned)
There are 8 local establishments participating. Each of them will have
a final round. Some of the 8 are; Crowell Bowl Stow, Harvard Lanes,
Putnam street Fitchburg, The Hub Lunenburg, The Palace Fitchburg,
Gardner....and a couple of others.
The top 5 bowlers in the finals go on t.v.. The format is first week 5
vs 4, second week the winner goes against 3, and so on. Top prize is
$250, and down from there. The biggest obstacle will be the viewing
audience on the cale networks. I believe the trial period is 4
tapings, so you still have a chance.
The first final was held last Friday......The qualifying scores were (5
strings) 643, 597, 596, 591, 563. Amazing that 563 was 5th. That is
only a 112 average, so you can see there is a chance for most people to
get on. Of course, I had a disappointing 551 (92 in the middle killed
me).

| You can say whatever you want on what constitues REAL bowling, but
candlepin bowling is fun for everyone. There is noone who can't do it.
I worked part-time at a candlepin house, and saw all kinds of people
coming in, from 3 years to 93........physically challenged, as well as
mentally challenged.....and you don't need to have the strength to lift
that heavy ball. We even provided ramps for the blind, handicapped,
elderly, etc.
This argument has gone on in this conference for 8 years, and all I can
say is I have done both, and if this wasn't candlepin country, I would
be a 10-pin bowler. But since, we have the game here, I will take
candlepin over 10-pin. Plus, I am better at candlepin anyway!
So, Daryll........why are you selling them balls anyway?????

| I'm selling the balls because they're too light.
In the league I used to bowl in, I used a teammate's set. I
switched leagues this year and had to pull an old set out that
the wife used to use. They're 2.4's I think. I'm used to a much
heavier ball and these light ones were taking 15 pins off my
average, although I think part of the avg drop is from switching
from one of the fastest houses I've ever bowled in, Park Place in
Windham NH to an alley in Merrimack NH.
I got a set of pro-rubber 2.7's for my birthday. Used them last night
for the 1st time and threw a 356 which is where I usually finish.

I use 2.6's....The 2.7's get to you if you are bowling in a lot of 5
stringers. They're fine for 3 strings, but I find that for 5 or 10
strings the lighter ball keep it's course. I am usually dropping a 2.7
by the fifth string which never kits the pocket.
2.4's are girly balls!!!

| I know, I told you that my wife used to use the 2.4's.
My wife bought me the 2.7's because I told her to get me the
heaviest available. I find I have more control with the heavier
balls. I tend to overthrow the lighter balls and if I try to
adjust my delivery, I lose even more control.
I know they're girly balls for sure now since Billlll just sent
me mail asking me if he could try em before he decides to buy em.
I rarely bowl more than 3. I've never bowled in a speed league

Wilbur Wood was from Belmont, Lockwood,Travers and (non-pitcher) Hebner
were from Norwood. That's Belmont High not Belmont Hill a la Toby
Kimball.
AKA, Billy Travers......Excellent CANDLEPIN BOWLER!!!!!!

| I didn't know Billy but knew his father pretty well, I was probably in
college by the time Billy was in little league. I did hear a story
about one of the wags saying to Billy at the alleys "Kid, you could
could make some serious money at this game".
Bill had just signed a $350,000 contract with the Brewers (serious
money at the time).
As good a bowler as he was the competition in that racket is terrific
and the "spare change" is probably more motivation for ?????
(who that's guy that dominated ch. 5) and a few others.

| The guys dominating Channel 5 would have to be Tom Olszta and Paul
Berger (ex-DECcie). They are the only ones I know making SERIOUS?
money.
There was a trivia question re; Billy Travers years ago. He was
the only person in the history of the show who had not lost a match.
This was due to the baseball strike in '81. Travers qualified for
Channel 5....went on.....won.....then the strike was settled, and he
headed back to Milwaukee undefeated. Of course this changed years
later, when after his retirement from BBall, he again qualified for the
show, beat a good friend of mine, and then lost the next week.
A little candlepin trivia for all you buffs.

| Hey guys. Just checkin in to say Hi! I've lost all interest in the
great candlepin debate since CH5 in Boston pulled it Saturday show,
after 37!!! consecutive years. Just can't get up the energy. Haven't
been in SPROTS for over a year, but came in to see who's still around.
Well, back to the trenches. See you in another year.
