| The Woofs won't trade Laettner. Acutally, he's going to be a pretty
decent player. It's just too bad that their last two #1 picks have
been busts. (Spencer and Longley)
Since Sidney took over a few days ago, there seems to have been an attitude
change. I listened to the game on radio and everyone was commenting
how much better the D was. Of course they were pathetic before, so
standing in an upright position would have been an improvement. :*O
Lowe already has shown other changes. 'Saw, last night Chris Smith had
twelve minutes, including playing down the stretch the final five
minutes. Neither Musslehead or Rodgers would play the young guys much
especially at the end when it mattered. They weren't developing. Now at
least they'll have a chance to. Also, Lowe will command a full effort.
If someone is not giving that, they will be pulled. The players
understand that and accept it. Why Rodgers couldn't do this is
anyone's guess.
Will they win more games than the Vikes? Hmmm, we're talking about a
team that hasn't beat anyone except Dallas (in other words, they
haven't beaten anyone) since last November 18th. They're 6-24 and would
have to go 6-42 the rest of the way. Yeah, I think they will.
In fact, I'll go out on a limb and predict they'll beat Denver tomorrow
night.

Thanks Spud.
There's a lot of interest in Smith around here, and we don't hear much.
I hope he gets a decent shot now....

| According to Lowe, Smith deserved to be in at the end. He was playing
better than Michael Williams. Williams has a tendancy to turn the ball
over quite a bit. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Smith's PT
increase now.

No, I don't think so.
Tate George was from Jersey. I can't remember where Robinson is from,
and I think that Chris Smith was from Bridgeport but I could be wrong.
Robinson was definitely from the period of time where most UCONN hoopsters
were from within the state.....
But, UCONN is THE SHOW as far as college hoops here in the state, and
the UCONN fans follow the kids after they leave. There was mucho coverage
of Tate George going to the Nets up here, and in fact, WFSB-TV3 from
Hartford sent a camera crew down to NJ for Tate's first game with the
Nets. It was big news here.
So, we think of them as our own if they've been Huskies.....

66.11 | Woofs problem is with the GM | TNPUBS::NAZZARO | Why won't BC play UMass? | Mon Jan 18 1993 15:44 | 11 |
| Unfortunately for the Woofs, having McCloskey as GM pretty much ensures
their wallowing in mediocrity for the next several seasons. I like
Sidney Lowe a lot, and I think he has the potential to be a great
coach, but McCloskey is a poor judge of personnel and is one stubborn
sumbitch. He personally dismantled the two-time NBA champion Pistons
and turned them into a lottery team. He'll keep the Woofs a lottery
team for at least the next 2-3 years, and if he keeps making terrible
trades like giving up on Gerald Glass for two marginal CBA players in
Brad Sellers and Lance Blanks, it'll be longer than that.

| Yeah, I agree on that trade anyway, but believe me, McClosky is a
definate improvement over Bob Stein.
As I'm hearing locally, Glass is getting zip playing time in Detroit as
well. It sounded like he wasn't earning the PT here in practice. What
a waste of talent - if that's the case.

| Woofies continue playing very good BB under Sir Sidney. Last night
they beat Portland IN Portland by 13. After the first 90 seconds,
Woofs led the rest of the way. Portland made a couple of runs, but
they withstood them every time. One great sequence had Luc Longley
blocking a Drexler dunk, leading a fast break the other way where
Laettner slammed it home. Portland and their fans couldn't believe it.
Woofs passed better than I've ever seen them. Quick snap passes and
around the horn beautifully. Reminded me of the Celts in the mid 80's.
Too bad I'm not in Vegas. Portland was favored by 17 1/2 and Phoenix
is the same tonight. Woofs have won two in a row and are the only
expansion team to beat Portland (they've done it twice now - both times
in Portland) They've also took Phoenix to the wire in OT and lost a
close one in Detroit.
Hmmm, suppose Phoenix will take them seriously tonight?

Subject: San Diego reportedly offers deal for T-Wolves
SAN DIEGO (UPI) -- A San Diego newspaper reported Sunday that a local
group has prepared a bail-out for the owners of the Minnesota
Timberwolves that could bring the NBA club to Southern California.
The San Diego Union-Tribune said businessmen working to build a new
sports arena in San Diego have come up with a memorandum of
understanding under which the group would loan $35 million to
Timberwolves owners Marv Wolfenson and Harvey Ratner. In exchange, 49
percent of the team would be immediately sold to San Diego buyers with
the rest sold in a few years.
If Wolfenson and Ratner agree to the deal, the Timberwolves could be
relocated in time for the 1994-95 season, the Union-Tribune said.
``There is still some work to be done, but (a move to San Diego) is
very plausible,'' Joe Pettirossi, the team's chief financial officer
told the newspaper. ``I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand.''
Pettirossi, Wolfenson and Ratner met in San Diego last month with
members of Arena 2000 and the manager of the existing sports arena,
which was home to the San Diego Rockets and Clippers during the NBA's
two previous stints in California's second-largest city.
The Timberwolves brief life in Minneapolis could be cut short by the
financial problems of the owners. Wolfenson and Ratner, both of whom are
68 years old and have vacation homes in San Diego. The two want the city
of Minneapolis to assume their $74 million debt on the Target Center by
March 1, which is the NBA's deadline for teams to declare their
intention to move next season.
The proposed $35 million loan from San Diego would lessen the debt
burden on Wolfenson and Ratner.
Minneapolis city officials have not made a decision on the arena
debt, but San Diego's Arena 2000 has not come to an agreement with city
hall on funding their proposed downtown arena.
Under the proposal reported Sunday, the Timberwolves would play for
two years at the existing Sports Arena rent free.

This would be a nice way to disown them as one of my teams and make a
nice segway to the Bulls.

Stick it to the taxpayers (again)
Who built the Center? If the city has any brains, they oughtta JUST SAY NO
and let that Center rot. If they go ahead and assume the debt, it's pretty
much guaranteed you'll be paying another 5-10 million a year to
support the beast.

| It's something the city is going to have to hash out. The business'
would prefer the team stays, because of the additional shopping fans
do. Also, there are a ton of restaurants and bars within a few blocks
of the arena. One of the owners yesterday denied the report of the
possible move.
