6597.0. "Springfield "loaded" M1A." by CSC32::HADDOCK (Pas Fini!) Tue Mar 11 1997 18:12

Has anyone had any experience with the Springfield Armory offer on
the "loaded" M1A? Orders must be in to the distributor by March 31,
which is the end of the offer. Under the threat of now-or-never
I've been chewing on ordering one of these. They come in several
models: Standard, walnut, or Fiberglas stock. Blued or stainless
barrel (stainless barrel about $50 more).

The "loaded" is National Match barrel, trigger group, and flash
suppresser with 3 20rnd clips. Plus some coupons for certain
    accessories.

Is there really any advantage to a stainless barrel? They seem
to be popular, but everything I've read on them is they are not
    really all that necessary.

The Springfield 'loaded' M1a is an OK deal but not a great deal.
The guns have standard stocks, not the heavy stocks that you want to
build a SuperMatch. They are not bedded.

From a competition point of view, one can find SuperMatches, bedded,
with rear lugs for $1500, if you watch the ads in GunList.

Stainless barrels look nice, but are distracting when shooting
competition. Some shooters paint them black or cover them with carbide
    smoke after a while.

    SA's list price of a Supermatch is $2050 so ($1500) wouldn't be a bad
deal for a SuperMatch. Providing one was able to make sure the barrel
wasn't shot out. Just the new barrel for a SuperMatch lists for just
under $400, which would put it right back up there.

On the other hand, by the time you buy a "loaded" option, then have it
bedded (don't know if I want to risk doing that one myself) you
probably will be running about the same price, and without the heavy
stock. So the best bet may be to just buy a new SuperMatch, but
that prices is about what I hoped to have in it by the time I mounted
    scope, etc.

There's been some discussion in rec-guns on the internet on this
lately. More than a few people were complaing about the fit and
finish of the rifles they recieved. The complaints were also there
about Springfiend not willing to remedy complaints also...

Then again there were other people that loved them...

Seems it would be best to try to find a dealer that has 1 or more
on the shelf so you can see before you buy if you decide to....

There's a guy that is active in rec-guns that owns a company called
Fulton's Armory. Clint is his name I believe. They do custom rifles
from basic to super match and a few stops in between. Have read many
positive comments on that company & not one negative...

I don't rememer where they are but I have the homepage bookmarked
in my aol account. I can get for tommorrow & post if you want to
     check them out.

    Re -last couple

It is possible to buy a NEW M1A supermatch for $1500. Watch the ads in
GunList or get a friend who shoots highpower to ask around among
competitive shooters & look in club newsbulletins.

As is usual with my investments, I usally don't buy things that increase
    in value over time.

M1A's are an example. Many service rifle shooters are going to the
AR15. So there are a lot of new, or almost new, M1a's for sale.

By the way, $400 is a rather high price for a SuperMatch barrel, even
installed. This might be a reasonable price to upgrade a new standard
    rifle to supermatch however.

If you talk to Clint at Fulton Armory (does excellant work), tell him I
    said hi.

Well, since I don't have access to any of this information right now,
if anyone does and could pass such information on to me I would
appreciate it. My Mom sent me some money for Christmas, and my brother
unexpectedly paid me for some work I had done for him, so if I raid
the piggybank I might just be able to pull it off. I have about
two weeks to decide on the SA offer in order to get my order in on
time, but if I _could_ get a new or very near new SuperMatch for about
the same price, looks like that would be the better deal.

Fred....if you have time this weekend, you may want to amble on
up to the Tanner show. Should be plenty of M1As to look at
and price....and of course at the big gun show, cash don't just
talk, it screams :) Also, there's Crossroads of the West next
    weekend....

I contacted Fulton Armory. They don't do "for sale" items. They
just work over what you send them. Maybe the thing to do is to
find some shot-out piece of c**p and have them work it over.

    Fred,

For $500 you can get a new receiver. The no worries about it being
    mistreated or worn out, etc.

You send Fulton a reciever, they build the rest....

Seems most people buy a chinese M1A & reuse that reciever.
Or find a source for a reciever. Maybe thru someone in Shotgun News?

Well I checked into the other options. Fulton Armory, Gunsource etc.
Doesn't look like the "loaded" option is all that bad. The gunshop
gave me a written price for a little over $1200 for special order.
Distributer was backordered 60 at last check. Mine's on order.
I told my wife that this will be the one they need to bury with me :^).

www.springfield-armory.com indicates deadline has been extended to
    May 31, 19997.
