| I bought some of these from a guy at at a gun show and gave them a
try-out in the 30-30. The ones I bought require a special tool to
seat the bullet into the accelerator tightly. I made up about six
bullets. They don't give very good loading information. Suggested
method is to start with max load of fastest powder for smallest bullet
listed and work up from there. I used a max load of H4198 for 100
grain bullet. Using 55 grain bullet, bullet and accelerator weigh in
at about 60 grains. Fired them off out at the range. They seem to
work, but initial accuracy was not good. Will do some more work on
them later.

3809.22 | safety issue!!! | MINOTR::BANCROFT | | Mon May 05 1997 11:07 | 9 |
| I thought the Accelerator bullet was pointed.
If so, THIS IS DANGEROUS IN A FIREARM WITH TUBULAR MAGAZINE (shouting
intentional). The pointed bullet may rest on the primer of the shell
ahead of it in the magazine. Recoil may cause the ignition of the
shell exactly as if the shell had been hit by a firing pin.
Only the Lebel rifle, with a specially designed almost conical shell
casing was ever safe for pointed bullets in a tubular magazine, and
even they had a specially designed chamfered case rim to force the
bullet to the side of the magazine.

Correct to a point. I guess I'd assumed everyone was following the
note about the Savage 340 I've been working on. It has a box magazine.
In any case. Instructions on the accelerators recommend that they
be fired single-shot anyway.

| I worked up from 38 g of H4198. Listed max load for 100 g bullet.
Well with 40 grains of H4198 the chrono says its pushing them out
at just over 3400 fs. Thats downright respectable for a 30-30. Only
about 200 fs short of 22-250 range. Using Siera 55 gr. Varmiter bullets
and the accelerator together weighs about 65 gr. Couldn't detect any
pressure signals and recoil was still on the mild side compared to 150 g.
full loads. 40 gr. of H4198 is about all you can get in a 30-30 brass.
I'll have to do some calculating. 3400 is pretty respectable, 4198 is
about the hottest powder listed in my manual for rifles, and compressed
loads are trickier than I want to mess with.
Couldn't tell much about accuracy on this outing. I changed scopes
on the rifle and was on the 25 yd range for sight in and chrono work.
The groups did seem to tighten up the faster it got, though. I'm
more encouraged than I was last time.
