991.0. "Official: Digital X.500 Directory Service V3.1 SSB" by FORTY2::PULLEN (Julian Pullen) Wed Mar 26 1997 11:21

Digital X.500 Directory Service V3.1 SSB
	    ----------------------------------------

This note announces the availability of the network kits for Digital
X.500 Directory Service V3.1. Kits are available for OpenVMS VAX,
    OpenVMS Alpha and Digital UNIX.

This Digital UNIX version supports Digital UNIX V4.0d or later. This
version will not run on Digital UNIX V3. Digital UNIX V4.0A may be
used, provided you apply patch 123.00 (OSF405-400151). Digital UNIX
V4.0B may be used, provided you apply patch 44.00 (OSF410-400151). No
patch is yet available for Digital UNIX V4.0C. (For internal users
there is a UNIX test patch Q48633, which can be used on UNIX V4.0a and
V4.0b instead of the official patch. Note the official patches contain
    many more fixes.)

This version of X.500 is year 2000 compliant. With this release, the
UTCtime matching rules used by the DSA have been changed so that dates
beyond the year 2000 are recognised by the DSA. UTC Time represent the
year as a two digit number For example, 10.30am GMT on 5th January 1997
is expressed in UTC Time as 970105103000Z. With the new time matching
rules, a time value with a year that is less than 50 is assumed by the
DSA to be after 2000. A time value with the year equal to or greater
than 50 is assumed by the DSA to be between 1950 and 1999. Note that
existing time values stored in the directory that contain a year value
less than 50 will be affected by the new UTCtime matching rule used by
    the DSA.

You are strongly advised to read the cover letter, installation guide
and release notes before installing this software.

What about plain UNIX V4.0?

Are the O/S patches still needed on the local machine if only the DUA parts are
running locally, talking to a remote DSA?

Can a 3.1 DUA talk to a 3.0 DSA, and vice versa?

Thanks,
Scott

A 3.1 DUA can talk to a 3.0 DSA.

The patches are needed when using XTI in a multi-threaded
program. So you may be able to use the DUA without installing
the patches.

I dont know if we have tested with plain 4.0

991.3How to get patch 44VMSNET::C_ESTESMon Apr 07 1997 22:278
    Hi Julian,

How does a customer get a copy of patch 44 for Unix 4.0b? I have
customer that needs that patch and I cannot find it.

    Thanks in advance,

Any idea when we can expect to see this version hit the various
layered product CDs? In the meantime I assume it is okay to
supply the net kit to sites already running the field test?

If you copied an X.500 V3.1 OpenVMS Alpha or
OpenVMS VAX kit before 12-Apr-1997 you should
re-copy the kit to get the correct SSB version.
A VMS only shadowing bug has been fixed.
