967.0. "Dir synch and PMDF" by NETRIX::"[email protected]" () Mon Feb 03 1997 21:08

I haven't been working in this area in quite a few weeks, and am a little
rusty.
So pardon the basic question.

Customer has Lotus Notes, ALL-IN-1 and Mailworks using Innosofts PMDF as
the MTA, would like to synch up the directories. I was setting up a demo to
show exactly this aroound a year ago. What is the best way for them to do
this?

Again I appologize, I haven't been working with this product suite in a while.

Thanks

    Exactly which directories do they want to synch?

    PMDF-X500
    Digital X.500
    DDS
    others?

    Do you have the documentation on Innosoft's synchronisation tools?

    (Who are you? I have an interest in this topic)

    Cheers

    Well - there's always XDSU - see:

    	http://clmnte.cop.dec.com/products/xdsu.html

    It is perfect for synching a bunch of heterogeneous directories via X.500.

967.3PMDF X.500 provides some tools30753::WIEGLEBVoracious schools of lottery girlsSat Feb 08 1997 01:1827
    I've been starting to play with PMDF X.500. Their DirSynch tools look
    like they might be worthwhile, but I haven't yet been able to find
    anyone in Digital who's used them in a production environment.
    (The question was posted in the THEBAY::PMDF conference, but has not
    received any replies as of yet. KP7 to add it to your Notebook.)

    The PMDF X.500 DirSynch tools don't look nearly as powerful as XDSU,
    but one benefit is that they are packaged with the X.500 product at no
    extra cost. PMDF X.500 looks like a good solution for customers
    running other PMDF products like the SMTP backbone, and who have less
    demanding X.500 requirements. (It's a 1988 Quipu implementation).

    I've worked with DSU for some time and it's a great tool for DirSynch.
    Having seen the docs for XDSU, it looks like an even more powerful one
    than DSU. For larger sites with complex directory synch needs, they
    will probably want to invest the extra money and do it right with XDSU.

    DEC X.500 Soapbox Alert: Another benefit of PMDF X.500 is that they
    offer LDAP access on their X.500 product on VMS, unlike a certain other
    company I can name. This issue has caused no end of problems trying to
    sell DEC X.500 into VMS shops. People want LDAP and they don't want to
    have to maintain multiple operating systems to get it. This means we
    usually stand to lose most ALL-IN-1 shops right off the bat. I really
    wish we would resolve this problem quickly. Thanks for letting me get
    that off my chest.

    Dave,

    Thanks for the nice writeup on Dirsynch - you will have to try XDSU
    sometime, though. :-)

    Re:  LDAP support on OpenVMS

    I noticed that libldap.h from a Digital Unix system has a few of the
    following:

	#ifdef __VMS

    Is/was an OpenVMS version available and just not being released for some
    reason? Maybe another group could help port/support a VMS ibxd (ldap
    server) if X.500 doesn't have the resources. (not to mention ibxlookupd).

    It does seem that a directory w/o LDAP support is a loser at this point.

967.5Client code for VMSwookpc.ogo.dec.com::LEETue Feb 11 1997 17:395
Remember that DXDLU is an LDAP client, so the VMS specific ifdefs are
probably to support that. I think there is also VMS code for the UMich
LDAP distribution, but I don't know if there is an LDAP server port.
