1587.11Growing bulbils?TNPUBS::CARRASCO`Compassion is wealth'Tue Feb 18 1997 15:2612
Does anybody know how to grow bulbils? I collected some last August
while I was on vacation, and planted them right away. They've grown
roots, but no leaves.

Maybe they're still waiting for winter? Should I put them in the
fridge for a little bit? Maybe a month? Or just keep waiting?

I've grown lillies from scales, and they didn't need a cold period.
But maybe bulbils are different.

    Pilar,

What kind of bulbils do oyu have? Many things grown from bulbs
require a cold period of anywhere from a few weeks to several months.
The fridge or a coldroom might turn the trick for you.

Meg,

I don't know the exact species; just an interesting plant in the garden where I was
on vacation last summer. Some kind of Turk's cap lily, orange with dark spots, that
was blooming like crazy at the end of August. I was hoping I could grow the bulbils
indoors over the winter to give them a head start this year.

I think I'll put some of them in the fridge for a month and see how they do.

    Pilar,

I don't know where you vacationed, but if it was a temperate climate, I
would bet they bulbils need to be chilled. The fridge sounds like a
    perfect place.

I think those are Tiger Lilies. The little black seeds root after they
fall off the plant but don't sprout leaves till around March after a
cold period, you may want to put the tray outside and let nature take
it's course. The first year they just sprout leaves that look like a
wide blade of grass, it takes a few years for them to develop into full
blooming bulbs. We had a 6 footer in the garden last year with about 20
     flowers.
