Tulips, Daffodils, Hyacinths, Crocus, Dutch Iris are all spring bulbs Lupine, Columbine, Violets, Bearded Iris, Peonies are spring perennials and bloom a little later. Wild Geranium, some ground Phlox varieties and Lychnis will bloom from late spring to the end of summer. Delphinium will give you a spring and a fall bloom if you deadhead Allium, Gaillardia, Black-Eyed Susan, Purple Coneflower, Daisies, Foxglove are early summer and bloom till fall (except the Allium (bulb)). Platycodon, Poppy, Hosta Lily are mid summer Gladiolas, Asters, Lilies are later summer, Mums and what I think is Veronica are end of summer into fall Iris, Hosta Lily, Day Lily, Caladium and probably a bunch of others have nice foliage all season. Then there's always annuals for color all season as well There are a bunch of summer bulbs but they usually require lifting so I don't plant them, I try to stick with stuff that isn't too tricky. My parents had a huge garden several years ago with a slate walkway, small bridge and waterfall to a fish pond (~350 sq ft) it was really neat, it ended up getting neglected (for about 10 years) and overgrown, 2 years ago I started fixing it up alot of the plants were still there but had stopped blooming because of the weeds. I wanted constant color so I went through the same process it sounds like you're going through now. I looked through every magazine I could get my hands on, ordered a lot of stuff through the mail, and collected a lot of seeds. Breck's and Spring Hill are 2 mail order companies I've been very pleased with. Their catalogs have a huge variety and information on bloom times, soil and sun conditions for best growth etc.. Once I started cleaning it up my parents became interested again and they redug the fish pond. It's a nice little sanctuary when everything's filled in. Andi | |||||

I've probably managed to kill as many things as I've had success with. I tend to lean toward the hardier plants now, I've yet to get a Begonia to to bloom and only had one Canna that ever produced anything. I have a few hybrid roses that I pamper but that's it. Andi |
