7177.0. "LN17ps not responding from Macintosh" by CSCMA::RUSSELL () Fri Apr 25 1997 08:17

HI,

I'm working with a customer that cannot use the ln17ps from a Macintosh
with Ethertalk.

I'm not familar with this type of configuration so I was asking here for some
advice.

Thank You,
Lynda

-Working with the field engineer here is what we came up with so far.

The config sheets shows...

postscript version = 2.26
service name=dne1145F9_1
systen memory=6 MB

From Ethernet menu...

port=enabled=on
system language=postscript
language sensing=on

The ln17ps is connected to a 10-base-t connector going to a wall jack hub#7.
port#28.3, we verified that is alive and working.

From the DNIC-ENET manaul, chapter 4 "ethertalk"

We went through the steps to enable the printer, drivers were prevuiusly
installed by the customer, we believe this install was done correctly.

This macintosh network does not have ZONES, so we have no zones selected
for the print queue.

The Appletalk Phase 2 is running, customer says that it is. Not sure how to
verify this., I know that it needs to be running with Ethernet.

When sending a postscript job to the printer queue, the "onpage menu" shows
the following...no zones selected, printer status, sending data, printer not
responding. No files will print.

Turn language sensing off, but that shouldn't be the problem.

More questions:

Does the printer show up in the Chooser when the apprpriate driver is selected?
Workable drivers can include the OnPage driver, virtually any LaserWriter
driver, or an Adobe PSPrinter driver. I have best luck with the LaserWriter
driver.
Has the customer gone through the configuration steps after associating
the driver and the printer? (Select the driver in the Chooser.
Select the printer from the right Chooser window. Click Setup, then
follow steps to associate a PPD. The OnPage driver that comes with the
LN17 puts the PPD file for the LN17 in an unconventional place. You might
want to move it to the Printer Descriptions Folder in the Extensions folder
in the System Folder.)

Lastly, please describe "won't print" and "won't connect" more specifically.

an update from my customer, he is still at a lost, he cannot get the ln17ps
to work from the Macintosh.

Language sensing is now set to "off"

From Chooser, selects Laserwriter8, then selects the printer, setup, select PPD,
He gets 2 choise 1) dcln17x1.ppd(labled digital ln17 version 3). When this
driver is selected he gets this error "mesage dcln17x1.ppd file could
not be used, ppd file generic will be used instead".

another try...

From Chooser, we select dcln17_1.ppd, select that, this driver worked.
When a ps file is sent...customer says it sits there for longest time,
then he gets a ps error message on the screen. AT this time I am waiting to get
the exact erro from the custmer. There is no output on the printer.

Turn on "print errors" in the PostScript menus.
It's not a very good error reporter, but it's something,
and it should allows us to distinguish PostScript errors from communications
errors at the printer.

But, yes, get the screen-reported error too.

The screen reported error displayed this code " -1039"
not much to go on I know. I'll have the customer enable the
print errors from the postscript menu, I update the note when
    I have the info.

    Lynda,

What version of the Macintosh operating system is the customer using?
Check in the Apple menu, selecting "About this Macintosh...". You can
verify that AppleTalk is enabled in the Chooser. The lower right corner
has a very obvious switch that says "AppleTalk On () Off ()"

Can the customer select and configure the printer when the OnPAGE
driver is selected as well as when the Laserwriter driver is selected?

What is the FULL error message -- all of the text in the dialog box and
the icon as well. That number (-1039) is potentially a serious system
error. I suspect that turning on print errors won't tell us anything
since nothing is being printed yet.

Note: DCLN17X1.PPD should not be selected for either the OnPAGE or
LaserWriter printer drivers. That file is for use with old applications
(e.g. PageMaker v4.x). DCLN17_1.PPD should be used instead.

The Macintosh version is v7.5, lower right corner shows
	appletalk ON.

This printer is on loan for test purposes, if they can get the
LN17ps to work from this operating system they will buy more.
They like the specs. for this particular printer, and really want
	to get this to work.

The customer was able to select and configure the printer with
	both Onpage and Laserwriter drivers.

We are not able to get a FULL error message, we can;t even get
	an error page to print.

The timelimit is up on this printer, the customer is either has to pay
for it, or give it back, they don't want to pay if it's not going to
	work from the MAC.

I believe we covered just about everything from the printer side,
not sure if this is a system problem problem though.

	Should this case be IPMT'd?

	Thanks,
Lynda

Well, it WILL work.
I print from my Mac to the LN17ps in my area every day.
We just have to figure out your customer's mismatch.

What is the customer trying to print? From what application?
You mentioned "printing a PostScript file."
The app/driver combo develop the PostScript file and output it.
If you have pre-existing PostScript files you need a special utility
to direct-dump the file to the printer.

If the printer is in the Chooser, it's being seen on the net.
You say you can attach a PPD.
When you click "update printer info" do you get an accurate description
of the printer (memory, resolution, etc.)?
If so, communication is working to the printer as selected.

Let's step through some more increments.

By the FULL error message, I was referring to the dialog box you
    mentioned in 7177.4.

    Hi,
AN update to let you know that the customer went back to the VAR and
is asking for a new printer. Since he had the software/drivers setup
correctly, he thought a new printer might make the differance.

    Thank You,
    Lynda
