7168.0. "DCPS and UCX" by LISVAX::RIBEIRO_N (NELSON RIBEIRO @XIP) Thu Apr 17 1997 12:55

Hi all,

I have recently installed my vaxstation with the following products:
        - vms v7.1
        - ucx 4.1 and
        - dcps v1.3

After the installation i have configured the ucx and created some queues on
dcps using the printers ip address. The first problem i found was i couldn't get
anything to pass to the printer, the queue was always stopped. Then i decided
to see what was wrong and found out that i have a problem with the gateways
configured.

I solved the problem with the UCX and when i rebooted the system in order to
create the queue again with the dcps$startup.com, the queue was already created
and stopped.
I tried to do a start/que but i get the message
        %SYSTEM-F-ABORT, abort

Does anyone have some ideas?

Thanks,
NelsonR.

7168.1More information neededFUNYET::ANDERSONExchange *this*Thu Apr 17 1997 14:417
What printers are you trying to access? What network protocol are you trying to
use?

If you issue a REPLY /ENABLE command from a privileged account and then start
the queue, you may see a more descriptive error message.

7168.2it had better be a PrintServer printer...PAWN21::SCHULLMANDan SchullmanFri Apr 18 1997 04:397
Since you're using DCPS V1.3, the ONLY printers supported via TCP/IP
are DIGITAL PrintServer printers.

If you want to try TCP/IP with other printers, pick up a copy of
the DCPS field test (T1.4-5). See note 6 for pointers.

7168.3What?LISVAX::RIBEIRO_NNELSON RIBEIRO @XIPFri Apr 18 1997 10:4017
Hi Dan,

is this information for real? That the only printers that work with DCPS over
TCPIP are DECPrintservers?

I am asking this because i was trying to set a DCPS queue over TCPIP to a
LSR2000 and to also to a LN17.
The all thing started when a costumer said that he couldn't set a queue to these
kind of printers, so he opened a call, and right now i was trying to simulate
his enviroment and couldn't get to set a queue either. But my problem i think is
a little bit different because i can't get to set a queue to an LPS20 either.

NOTE: When i say that the costumer or me can't set a queue means that the queue
is defined but stays starting everytime i send a job to it.

Thanks for the replies,
NelsonR.

With the latest released version of DCPS, yes, that is correct.

DCPS V1.4, currently in field test, will work with many other printers. Please
see note 6.237 for more information.

Well, i told to the costumer that he wouldn't be able to set up a DCPS queue
over TCPIP to an lsr2000 nor the LN17.

Then he asked me if i knew anything about remote control software like HP has to
their printers, but to these two particular printers. He says that because he
has a large number of these printers, it's hard to control them all.
I known that the LSR2000 has a Lexmark motor but the software from Lexmark does
not work here; for some reason the software cannot connect to the printer.
My question is: is there any switch that is disabling this function in this
printer? How can i workaround this problem?

The LN17 is a Xerox motor but according to my investigations, there is no remote
control software; my question is, will Digital or Xerox produce this kind of
software to this particular printer? When?

Thanks for the help on this guys,
NelsonR.
7168.6Some management software availableFUNYET::ANDERSONExchange *this*Fri Apr 18 1997 13:2719

DCPS V1.4 will print via TCP/IP to the LN17 but not the Colorwriter LSR 2000+.

> Then he asked me if i knew anything about remote control software like HP has

The LN17 comes with DS/P management software, but it works on NetWare systems
only. The Colorwriter LSR 2000+ comes with the Spooler utility which can manage
the print jobs on the printer.

The 2000 has a Canon engine, also used by Lexmark in one of their models. I
wouldn't expect Lexmark software to work with a Digital printer.

Where can i find these two softwares you mentioned, DS/P and Spooler?
Are they on the net somewhere?

Thanks Paul and have a nice weekend,

DS/P ships with the LN17 and the Spooler ships with the Colorwriter LSR 2000+.
You can also go to our internal Drivers and Utilities page to get them.

7168.9LAT may work for youTAY2P1::HOWARDWhoever it takesFri Apr 18 1997 18:556
    The LN17 can be used with LAT protocol. If LAT is running on the VMS
    system and there is no bridge (or whatever it is) in the way, you can
    just point to the LAT address. We use LAT in this building even though
    DECservers have been removed.
