7134.0. "Multiple Pagemaker/Photoshop jobs fail on Colorwriter LSR 2000" by CSCMA::RUSSELL () Fri Mar 28 1997 10:35

Hi,

I have a customer who has an LSR2000 on W95. He is using Pagemaker and
Photo-shop applications.

When several print jobs are sent at once from these applications the
jobs go to the printer, the "ready" light flashs, but nothing prints.
From PrintManager the print jobs appear that they were sent to the printer.

The printdriver is V4.11,

I was wondering if anyone has heard of this problem and if there is a fix?

Thank You,
Lynda

    Lynda,

We haven't figured out what the problem is yet, so it's really hard to
say whether or not there's a fix.

Because you say the printer driver is "V4.11", I'm assuming that it is
the AdobePS V4.11 printer driver and that this is a Colorwriter LSR
2000+ model, running the V2.1 updated software, and not an original
'2000 model. This should be confirmed.

Printing directly from Windows 95 to any model Colorwriter LSR printer
is not supported--you need to print to an intermediate server. What is
this machine and does its printer queue indicate that the jobs have
    printed?

On any model of the 'LSR, a blinking Ready light only indicates that
communication is taking place between something and the printer, for
example, if an LSR Spooler is open and connected to the printer, the
    ready light will blink.

You used the word "hang" in the title of your topic but how is the
customer certain that jobs have hung? Can he print a simple job from a
different application at this point? I mentioned the LSR Spooler
before--that would be the ideal tool to use to determine where the jobs
are in the printer's internal queue, or determine whether there are any
errors. Double-click the document icons with a red slash through them
    to see any error message.

Of course, you can print from Windows 95 via a parallel cable to the printer.
There's just no way to print directly over the network without a third-party
package that would supply LPR/LPD printing on the Windows 95 system.

    This is a lsr2000-plus printer in a peer-to-to network from W95,
    /w parallell connection.

Unfortunately there are no servers invloved so they cannot use the lsr
    spooler.

After the mulitple print jobs are sent, lsr2000's ready button flashs,
but no jobs print, they can send another job from another application
and that print job will print fine. The printer does not hang in away
that they have to power-cylce the printer.

IS there another print driver that we could use to help solve the
    problem?
    Thank You,
    Lynda

Re: .2 Oops, I forgot about the parallel cable. Thanks for catching
that. As far as I know, there is no explicitly supported
third-party solution for PRINTING via LPR/LPD, right?

Re: .3 [I changed the title of your topic to better reflect the problem.]

Do these jobs print successfully individually or will no job from
Pagemaker and Photoshop print? I assume that Print PostScript error
information is checked in the printer driver (PostScript tab)? Is PRINT
TO PS ERROR on in the printer? In either case, is there any partial
result or error page? Is this a 16MB or 32MB unit? Is there lots of
image data involved? Is MS-DOS spooling enabled on the PC? (Check Port
Settings in the Details tab and suggest turning it off.)
7134.5more infoNECSC::RUSSELLFri Mar 28 1997 15:5111
    The printer has 32MB installed.

The files will print to completion if sent 1 at a time. The files
    have almost all image data.

Since the postcript error option was not enabled, the customer has gone
off to enable it and will report back with more information.

    Thanks,
    Lynda

Right.

I have the error page if anyone is interested....

the error page generated the following...

%%undefined offending command is = was blank
    the stack was also blnak.

Since this configuration is not offically supported, this problem
    cannot be resolved?

The customer feels that if W95 peer to peer network printing is NOT
supported, it should be clearly documented.

At this time I have a very frustrated and dis-satisfied customer.
He purchased the printer to print multiple jobs, and now he cannot.
I tryed to hlpe the customer but I cannot think of any other way to
    get mulitple jobs to print.

Printing is supported from a Windows 95 printer directly to the
Colorwriter over the parallel port. (Paul and I were referring to a
different configuration than the one described here.) The error page
that you transcribed seems to indicate that some kind of "garbage" or
an unprintable character is getting to the printer after the first job
    has been completed.

I suggested checking the MS-DOS spooling setting in the Port Settings
in the Details tab of the printer driver. In general, this would seem
to be some kind of port configuration or hardware problem because
individual jobs print correctly (always, every time, no error pages)
and multiple queued jobs result in no printing (never, with exactly one
error page as described). I'm not aware of any other fix for the
problem that has been described. If you haven't escalated this problem
    yet, I'd suggest doing so.
