7068.0. "printserver hangs with deleting current job" by DRHOOK::TONY () Thu Jan 30 1997 10:51

having numerous problems with all our printservers (lps20), where
they go into hang mode and console message displayed is deleting
current job. restarting queue or toggling any options from lpsconsole
can place printer back online. all printers loaded through dcps via
IP, using printserver software version 5.1-15. according to release
notes this is the latest. only way to get printer back online is to
reboot it. this is very annoying and time consuming baby sitting
	printer/queues.

any ideas to why this is happening?

what if any drawbacks of using total IP vs. DECNET?

thanks

7068.1What EXACTLY is happening?REGENT::WIMBERGFri Jan 31 1997 11:4532

Let's not confuse DCPS - the OpenVMS printing supervisor with LPS,
the PrintServer Supporting Host and Management software. Let's see
if we can sort this out -

You have LPS20s (turbos?), booting over IP from a VMS system using
    V5.1-15 of the PrintServer software.

You print to it using DCPS (version ???). When jobs are deleted the
printer hangs with the prints front panel saying deleting current job?
Or do jobs hang then you can't delete them? Are you using the logging
feature? What do the logs say?

Did this all work for you before and things started going bad when you
did what? Upgraded VMS? upgraded DCPS? moved? Changed from DECNET to IP
    for booting?

    One simple thing to check:

DCPS prints an error trailing page when a job is deleted. The printer
must be able to print - ie have paper, no jams etc.

Turn on logging and some trace capabilities (Described elsewhere in
this notesfile). Be more explicit when describing your hang problem.
Event sequence is VERY important to diagnosising your problems.

If your jobs are hanging, then the trace facility is what you want to
use. One of the features of V5.1-15 is PostScript level 2 which has a
better font caching mechanism then level 1. If your hangs are the
fatal system error hang or otherwise related to font caching, then
you'll need to get the ROM and memory upgrade for the LPS20 and start
    using PostScript level 2.

Nancy:

I'm not looking to confuse DCPS with LPS printserver. I'm looking to
find out why I am having these continuing problems and thank you for
	answering my note.

	DCPS version dcpsaxp013

When jobs are deleted front panel states "deleting current job"

i can delete job from VMS queue manager, stop/reset/start queue
and next job shows status of starting, but no changes are viewed
	from printer console LCD.

only way I have found to get printer back online is to reboot
	printserver.

more pronounced failures from when I went from decnet to tcpip!

	PrintServer Software: V5.1-15
VAXELN: V4.5
Print Engine Firmware: 1.2

will look for info on using traces.
