| Firstly, a quick apology - it is indeed an LPS17, not LPS17/600.
We have tried to simplify things
The network now has 4 things on it
- a 10BT hub
- the LPS17 - hopefully cofigured as 10.0.0.200
- a pc running NT4 server with the LPS kit installed. This pc is
running IP (NOT DECnet) with the ip address of 10.0.0.201
- a pc running as a sniffer. The summary and detail traces are included
as the next two replies
My interpretation of the traces is that the printer is doing a BOOTP
request, the pc is responding with what looks like good answers, but
the printer never does anything with the response.
Note that as there are no routers in our simplified network, we have
attempted to manually write an arp table entry for the printer into the
pc's arp cache, but it gets overwritten all the time
Can anybody throw any light on this - the only thing we have thought of
is that he printer is relatively old, and has thus far only been
working in a DECnet environment, so maybe the printer itself is at
fault (old firmware or something??)
thanks
Brian Jarman

7011.12 | suspect firmware revision | NECSC::HARVEY | Printserver Support- America's Zone | Tue Jan 28 1997 19:18 | 17 |
| Brian,
I have a LPS17 not a LPS17/600 that is booting from my NT 3.51
server. I used ip addresses of 124.0.0.1 for my server and 124.0.0.2
for the LPS17. It boots kust fine everytime.
The only thing was that I am running the latest firmware for the
printer which is 2.1 version. To find what version your printer has
just power it up and after the ethernet hardware address is displayed
there will be 3 set of numbers displayed on the second line. The first
number is the key firmware version.
I would suspect your LPS13 is using the old firmware that will not
allow it to boot from a NT server. The part number for the roms are
23-251E8-00 for E19/ROM#0 and 23-252E8-00 for E24/ROM#1.

| YES!!!
The numbers it displays are 1.0 1.0 1.0 - I guess this means V1
firmware
I will chase up new ROMS
thanks VERY MUCH

7011.14 | New part numbers for the ROMS | NECSC::HARVEY | Printserver Support- America's Zone | Wed Jan 29 1997 19:02 | 8 |
| Brian,
Glad that was it.
Oh I looked up the rom part niumbers and the 2.1 version part numbers
are 23-272E8-00 and 23-273E8-00.

7011.15 | Correct firmware => life is wonderful! | ADOV01::JARMAN | | Mon Feb 10 1997 20:55 | 6 |
| Just to close this out - MCS have upgraded the ROMs and it now works
just like we expected it should
thanks to all those who contributed

| Nice going Renis!!!!
Just to fill in the blanks, here is why the latest firmware is
required (and here is why it is crucial and reporting an outage to
INCLUDE the firmware and software version numbers in the outage along
with the correct product model number).
Because of architectural limitations of the operating systems, the
Novell, WNT and W95 kits perform the primary bootstrap differently
then do the U*IX kits as follows:
The printer broadcasts a bootp request
****The boot host responds with a bootp reply that is broadcast***
In version below V2.1 on the LPS17 and below 3.8 on the LPS20/32
the printer DOES NOT LOOK FOR A BROADCAST reply. This is why your
printer failed to boot.
I am glad Renis was able to get you up and running..

7011.17 | What about the driver problem | SHRMSG::HOWARD | Ben | Thu Feb 20 1997 16:20 | 3 |

7011.18 | Its differences in booting methods | NECSC::HARVEY | Printserver Support- America's Zone | Thu Feb 20 1997 17:32 | 13 |
| Ben,
Based on Jeffs earlier reply the old 1.0 firmware would have booted
from a plain unix platform. However the NT and Netware environments use
a different method for responding to the printers boopt requests. The
supported firmware 2.1 version supports this new booting method.
This would be the same for the LPS17s big brothers, the TurboLPS20
and LPS32 printers. To boot from the above platfoms the supported
firmware is 3.8 version. The part number to get the upgraded firmware
is LPS2X-FW.

7011.19 | lps2x-fw can't be ordered | CSCMA::SMITH | | Tue Feb 25 1997 12:44 | 5 |
| lps2x-fw should be the correct firmware number, but it can't be ordered
for some reason (I wish I knew). You must get it from field service
(23-276E8-00, 23-277E8-00), this is for the lps32, lps20 turbos.
