I have now found out that the revs as coming from the PCL menu
and it is: SW ver 1.36 03/23/94. The Postscript version 2 is=1.63.
Does this mean there is a fix for it or must our customer live with it ?

6847.3you have an early f/w version - escalateREGENT::LASKOTim - Printing Systems BusinessTue Apr 15 1997 15:353
Version 1.36 is NOT the latest firmware version. There have been two
later ones. You should escalate this problem to find out how to obtain
    the later firmware versions.

    Re .3 and Firmware revisions

If somone finds out what is the latest revision and how to get it,
would they please put the information here in the notes file? There
are several of these beasts languishing in Digit's homes and many of us
would be interested before the whole thing vaporises as I expect that
the home 5100's will be around looong after the comercial users have
    replaced theirs.

The specific problem being discussed here is very unlikely to occur in
a U.S. machine. If you have another bug, report it. There might be a
fix for it, there might not. Step one of the process in any case is:
    report. Step two is: escalate.

I expect, in 10 years or so of my use, that the 5100 will not have
even reached the first years worth of wear for a comercial installation
of the same engine. Given ther "rumors" of a couple of months ago...

Actually, though, getting the <fill in your favorite brand> of the
print cartridges will probably be an issue before the printer wears
    out.

(I wasn't specifically refering to this problem, just having access
to the "last" kit would be nice, in case...)

Not to be difficult, but to protect our ability to service people who NEED
our service, we have adopted plans that provide replacement code only
to people who are affected by KNOWN problems that are KNOWN to be corrected
in replacement firmware.
If you report a problem that we have never heard about, we probably don't
have replacement code to fix that problem.
If you are EXPERIENCING a problem that we DO know about, and it can be fixed
with a firmware upgrade that we have, then you are a candidate to receive
the new firmware. We don't have the means or facilities to do prophylactic
upgrades.

Related good news is that toner cartridges for this machine will likely
be available for a LONG time - it's a very popular Canon engine.
But as in most computers and peripherals in these times, you'll WANT to
upgrade your system to something newer/better long before you NEED to
replace the components.
