2945.0. "Problem Accessing shared resources" by CHR27::YEUNG (im2bz2p,ru?) Mon Jun 02 1997 01:55

I have a DEC supplied Jensen (DECps AXP 150) and a HiNote at home.
They are networked to each other via NETBEUI on Ethernet.
The Jensen runs WNT V4.0 and the HiNote runs W95.
The Jensen serves large disks and the CDROM to the HiNote.

I recently configured the HiNote so that I can log into the DIGITAL1
domain and use Exchange via dialup modem and TCP/IP. But now, I cannot
access the shared devices on the Jensen any more.

Both the HiNote and the Jensen are still in the DIGITALWSLAO1 workgroup.
All the shared resources on the Jensen grants Full Control to Everyone.
When I double click on the Neworking Neighborhood on the HiNote, the
Jensen ICON shows up, but when I double click on the Jensen ICON,
I get a dialog box saying "You must supply a password to make this
connectionn" for resource \\JENSEN\IPC$. When I try to map to one
of Jensen's shared devices (e.g., CDROM), I also get "You must
supply a password to make this connectionn" for resource \\JENSEN\CDROM.

I've never set a password for any of Jensen's shared resources,
so how come I have to enter a password? How do I fix this problem?

On the Jensen, if I double click on the Network Neighborhood ICON,
the HiNote does NOT show up.

Please teach this old VMS dog some new tricks.
Thanks.

You have not stated whether you have installed the TCP/IP protocol on
your Jensen. Perhaps the "\\JENSEN" that asks you for a password is
one that is running TCP/IP and is properly registered under WINS?

Digital NT RAS dialin points only allow TCP/IP.

I have this problem too. Only mine is with my Hinote (win95) and my
Pentium server (win95) at home too. I didn't have any problems up
until I configured my dialup to the Digital domain. I get around it by
just dialing into the domain at Digital with the Pentium server and
then connecting to the server with the Ultra. Works that way and
doesn't really cause any other problems.

I don't have this problem. Perhaps because I've installed
the AltaVista tunnel on my laptop & I have my Primary Network
Logon set to Client for Microsoft Networks (in Network Properties).

When I start up the laptop, I always get prompted to login to
the Digital1 domain. Then, when at home, I get a message that
no domain server was available to service my request. However,
my username/domain/password appear to be cached and used when
needed.

The other reason may be that the machine on the LAN at home is
not in a Digital workgroup domain, but in a local workgroup.
If your machine is a member of DIGITALWSlocN, doesn't it have
to get to a domain controller to authenticate users/passwords?

TCP/IP is properly installed because I use PPP to dialup to DIGITAL
without any problems. Even if I remove the modem card, reboot
the system, and only attempt to connect to the jensen over
NETBEUI/Ethernet, I get the password prompt.

I don't have a modem for the jensen :(
Besides, I don't seem to be able to undo what's been done to my laptop.
The jensen just doesn't want to talk to the laptop anymore without a
password. And I don't know what the password should be since I never
set one on the Jensen.

My laptop behaves the same way.

I've tried changing both the jensen and the laptop to be in
Workgroup WORKGROUP. But the password problem still exists even though
I'm not even connected to Digital.

Thanks

2945.5Well, hm...PTOSS1::MATSCHERZWed Jun 04 1997 12:0613
I think mine works because the Digital1 domain allows the systems to be
on the same workgroup. Otherwise it is disallowing it due to some kind
of security thing. I've found that I'm always allowed to the laptop
from the Pentium 100 system and when I do a "browse" on the network
from the laptop i can see the other systems only when I've connected to
the Digital1 domain. Interesting huh? Also a pain at the same time.
Hey who knows maybe Microsoft will just discontinue Windows95 before
they fix it ! Kind of like what we do around here. (disclaimer here..
don't flame me .. I've had a few bad products and I'm taking some steam
    off here ... )
