2922.0. "Unable to see RZ23L disk with Future Domain TMC1650 SCSI controller" by RDGENG::CHAMBERLIN (Danger! Do not Reverse Polarity) Tue May 06 1997 10:51
I've just installed a Future Domain TMC 1650 SCSI controller and DEC
RZ23L disk, as a secondary adapter to my existing IDE drive. I have the SCSI
bus terminated on board the controller and disk.
Windows 95 add new hardware auto detected the controller, and installed
the miniport driver from the win 95 CDROM (sorry can't remember which one, but
I,m sure its the correct one)
Although the controller shows up, correctly identified, in the System -
Device Manager tab, with the driver correctly loaded, the disk drive doesn't
appear anywhere. It doesn't show up anyware at all in Win 95. fdisk doesn't see
it either, because it doesn't have a drive letter.
The diagnostic program, FDSDA from Power SCSI can see, test and format
the disk OK, and the disk also shows up in the boot up reports if I enable the
controler on-board bios, or load the protected mode driver (MCAM18XX.SYS) from
Power SCSI, although Win 95 still doesn't see it. I shouldn't have to use these
with Win 95, and they dont seem to help either, except confirm that the
controller can see the disk.
My understanding is that the Win 95 driver should identify the disk to
Win 95 automatically, when it loads, so I shouldn't have to do anything else?
Does anyone have any suggestions please, as to what's wrong?
Thanks,
Ian Chamberlin.

| I guess the disk is not spun up. Hence FDISK doesn't see it.
Until there's valid partition information on a disk it won't show up
with a drive letter.

2922.2 | It is spun up. | RDGENG::CHAMBERLIN | Danger! Do not Reverse Polarity | Wed May 07 1997 04:16 | 12 |
| re .1.
Thanks for the sugestion, but yes the disk is spun up - I set it with SCU on my
Unix System, and I can hear it start up at power on, plus some clicking noises
from the heads.
Also, the low level diagnostics wouldn't be able to format it and do the
read/write tests if it wasn't spun up.

2922.3 | Assign a drive from BIOS settings? | WOTVAX::lzodhcp-182-48-148.lzo.dec.com::hiltong | [email protected] | Wed May 07 1997 05:18 | 5 |
| On my Adaptec I have to tell it to use (this is from memory) INT13 or
something to assign a drive letter. If I don't the drive can't be
seen from Win95.

2922.4 | Sure it is spinning? | CIRCUS::BOSKLOPPER | | Wed May 07 1997 15:08 | 8 |
| Ian in response to .1 you sure your drive is spin up?
I asked you this because the RZ23L has no spinup jumper and must
be started by software. I had that problem years ago and I used
spinup.exe or rzspinup.exe to start the drive. Than you can use
fdisk to see the drive. Try this. Hope it helps

I'd agree with .3, perhaps you need to check that
the drive is set for INT13 in ControlPanel-System-
DeviceManager-DiskDrives-Properties-Settings
to enable it to be partitioned with FDisk.
I have seen this same scenario with an RZ23, and
this is what was causing the problem. Hope this also helps,
Brian
