2886.0. "Win95 hangs 1-2 minutes after boot" by AXEL::FOLEY (http://axel.zko.dec.com) Tue Apr 01 1997 12:48

	I'm having an unusual problem with a PC I'm building.

	I have a Pentium 100 with 32MB memory. Windows95 boots fine,
	but about 1-2 minutes after booting, it hangs. Ctl-Alt-Del
	gives me the blue screen with "Waiting for Close Dialog Box"
	or something like that. Very weird.

	The disk drive is a SCSI disk on a NCR 53C810 PCI card.

	The original disk booted fine on a 486 system it came from.
	I've tried re-installing Win95 over the existing install but
	no luck. (The original system also had an NCR SCSI card)

	I've ensured that nothing is in the Startup group and nothing
	gets LOADed by any of the .INI files. (SYSTEM, WIN, etc..)

	I'm at about my wits end. I'm probably going to get another
	disk and install clean to see if that works. Any other
	suggestions?

						thanks,

	I figured it out.. I broke down and installed a fresh copy
	on a new disk and the system booted fine. I suspect a problem
	with the old PCI drivers installed on the old disk and the
	new PCI chipset on the motherboard.

	Now I just wish I could open the old registry to pull stuff
	out of it. Anyone seen a tool to do that?

2886.2safe mode?SIOG::L_POWERWed Apr 02 1997 12:174
    Have you tried booting in safe mode? if so does it also time out?
    have you checked your BIOS support for large HDD in your scsi utility?

    let me know.

	Booting in Safe Mode didn't help. It was hard to tell if it
	was slow or just hanging.

	BIOS support for large HDD's only applies to IDE disks. The
	motherboard is brand new with BIOS support for the NCR 53C810
	SCSI adapter I have. The boot disk having problems was only
	520MB. The disk I'm now using is a 800+MB disk. That's not
	having a problem.

	I still think it comes down to lots of "old" crud. It's
	probably better that I reinstall anyways. However, I
	would like to get at the old registry information on the old disk.

    to get info from the registry use the dos based regedit with the /e
    switch to extract. if you type regedit/? it will give you a
    comprehensive listing of all available options.
    you can also export registry branches using the windows95 gui based
    regedit (back up your existing system.dat 1st though!!)

RE: .4

	Thanks.. I found the info last night on the MS Knowledge Base
	and tried it out at home. I copied the old system and user.dat
	files and exported them to .reg files. I should be able to
	gleen what I need from them. (it's still probably easier to
	just reinstall the whole thing. :))

2886.6Registry editor in NU v2.0 ?DANGER::ARRIGHIand miles to go before I sleepFri Apr 04 1997 13:016
    There should be a way to get the registry editor in Norton Utilities
    v2.0 to point to something other than the current registry, but I'm not
    sure. It's a nice tool -- search facilities, easy backups or branch
    backups, cool stuff for registry wimps like me.

	Alas, I don't have a copy of the Norton Utilities.. It'll
	be cut and paste to .reg files for me..

    I tried to export the section of the registry that stores the
    color schemes. It worked, but it is a single entry with every single
    scheme in it. If you try to import it into another system, it will
    wipe out any customizations already on the target machine.

    Anyone know a way to grab just one scheme?
