2846.0. "Network name not found over tcp/ip" by USDEV::IRWIN (Sometimes You're The Bug) Thu Mar 13 1997 09:20
I don't get this. I have 2 PC's in my office with virtually the same network
configuration setup, they both use DHCP to obtain an IP address. I used to be
able to map network drives to either machine from home, like 1 month ago.
Now, the last 4 or 5 attempts from home (RAS dial up ), I can only map a
network drive to 1 of the pc's and not the other. I have tried to reboot the
PC I can't get to at least 3 times, and renewed the IP address.
I keep getting the error that the computer name or share name not found. If
I go to the start button (all machines are win 95 ) and choose run, 1 PC works
fine and the other comes back with network name not found.
From in work, over netbui, I can map drives to both PC's. It seems over dial
up or even someone outside the LAN, gets this error, I assume trying to come
in over TCP/IP.
I can ping both boxes from home by short name and get reply's.
Any ideas on what to look for ?
SKUTTL works fine
NOHATS does not (both at ogo.dec.com)
Thanks for any help,
Dave

| I assume you have the correct name/address pairs in LMHOSTS? Or are you
using WINS (or maybe both)?
Note that the NetBIOS name doesn't have any relation to the TCP/IP
address, or the name associated with it.

I did not register either node in WINS or put them in a lmhosts file due to
the fact that the addresses are not static, I get assigned and address from
DHCP when I reboot. I have my win95 dialup setup to get DNS and WINS
server values from the server when it connects via RAS dialup.
I thought through DNS and WINS it would resolve the name to and address and
that is why I can ping by short name and it finds the address. However when
I try to map a network drive or use the start RUN command, I can only seem
to find 1 of the PC's and not the other.
Perhaps I shoult try to use lmhosts to see if that allows me to get there
for now at least ?
Thanks for the quick response,
Dave
