2804.0. "Wavetable in software for SB16/32 owners. $29.95" by JULIET::HARRIS_MA (Networks Sales Exec) Tue Feb 18 1997 12:48

    Attention SB16/SB32 owners!

    Creative releases SOFTWARE-ONLY wavetable sound. $29.95 (Avail: Mar 2, 1997)

    	Creative has just announced their Wavetable upgrade software which
    is DRIVER resident. That means that ANYONE with a SB16 or SB32 board
    can pay $29.95 for the software, (www.creaf.com has it downloadable)
    and then start utilitizing WAVETABLE
    sound in their windows application. It makes MIDI applications see
    32-voices and sounds great! No hardware upgrade needed.

    FYI only.

2804.1DANGER::ARRIGHIand miles to go before I sleepTue Feb 18 1997 15:596
    I don't understand this.  Was there a SB32 without a hardware
    wavetable? The SB32pnp is really an AWE32 with some minor changes,
    like it doesn't come with 512k ram, but has the connectors for it. The
    AWE32 retail also comes with an extra software application or two.

2804.2Does it sound any better?DECWET::RWALKERRoger Walker - Media ChangersTue Feb 18 1997 17:267
	The only thing I can find is it will add to a SB32 is more
	'voices' using the FM chip and software. I would like to hear
	if anybody has found this useful. I'm not sure about
	trading off a lot of CPU for these extra 32 voices.

	I even wonder if most current games use all of the 32 that are
	already there.
2804.3It's like the extra 32 voices on an AWE32MARVIN::SHANDMike ShandWed Feb 19 1997 10:0734
As I understand it, this is the same "software" wavetable, which is used to add
the extra 32 voices to make an AWE64. I haven't heard how good they are, or seen
how much CPU they steal. Incidentally, they are affering the upgrade for $19.95
to memebers of "creative connection". I still don't know if it is worth it even
for that.

2804.4BewareDECWET::RWALKERRoger Walker - Media ChangersWed Feb 19 1997 12:1312
	I haven't tried the general option but I did load the plugin
	version that is free. Now when ever my system comes back from
	power management there are no sounds, wave or midi. It takes
	a reboot to get the sound card working. I'm not impressed
	with the software Creative dumps on users.

	The plugin installed some drivers because W95 had to restart
	and rebuild the driver database but of course it the setup or
	readme doesn't tell you what it changed.

	This is with a SB32 PNP on a P133 system that worked fine before
	the new "goodie".
2804.5Wavetable hardware daughtercard is a better valueJULIET::HARRIS_MANetworks Sales ExecMon Feb 24 1997 12:507
    I too looked at it as a frivolous way to spend CPU cycles...

    I have a wavetable daughtercard that sounds just fine, and takes no
    extra CPU. The wavetable plugin header card was only $25. (Turtlebeach
    RIO deal I made)

2804.6Usenet reports are not goodMARVIN::SHANDMike ShandWed Feb 26 1997 06:394
Most of the reports I've seen about this complain that the sound quality
is very poor.
