I have a no-name clone system with Cirrus Logic chip on the video card. I forget the card name but I can post it later if it is important. The problem is that when I get games for the kids (ie. Oregon Trail, Storybook Weaver and a couple others) we usually have problems with some aspect of the game (like it freezes up). The tech support person almost always attributes the problem to the Cirrus Logic chip and the fact that the developers would have to write special drivers for it. Sometimes they say the driver is in the works and will be ready soon (haven't seen on yet) or that they arn't going to develop a driver for it and I should get my money back. Is there some compatability problem with Cirrus Logic video chips? What VLB video card is the best/most compatable? Thanks in advance, d.t.

I used to have a Cirrus Logic VLB board. In about two and a half years, I never did find a driver for it that wouldn't hang or crash the system regularly. On the other hand, I've had pretty good luck with both software and hardware on S3 based video boards.

I also have a VLB Cirrus logic board. It works fine except that for some reason or other Win95 can only see 1mb of the 2mb of memory on the board. Oh well....

My VLB Cirrus board, when it wasn't crashing Windows 3.1, had 2 mb (upgraded from 1). It could see 2, but whenever I tried using higher res graphics, or deeper color depths, which is to say whenever I tried using more than 1mb of on-board RAM, everything looked ok, except that the hot point on the pointer was offset about 20 pixels from where the pointer was drawn. |
