Gateway and Microsoft are unable to identify the cause of this problem,
particularly as the Direct Cable Connection does not work either. I
can't access the Network Neighborhood Properties to set up sharing,
even if there is no network card in the machine.
Next step will probably be to blow it all away and install Win95 OSR2.

Reformatting was necessary. Once I reformatted and reinstalled I had no
further problems. OSR2 installed everything perfectly.
