Is there a way to remove DirectX3 or version 2 from a system EASILY?
And doesn't the #9 GXE64 boards use the S3 chipset? I don't really want
to do a full OS install just to remove it (which to me is quite silly
if you can't de-install it easily) and am thinking the problem I am
having is with DirectX3 and the newest #9 Hawkeye utility and drivers
from #9. I'll check their page to see if they have any DirectX2/3
information also.

2470.6 | Set display to VGA, reboot, then... | JULIET::HARRIS_MA | Networks Sales Exec | Fri Apr 04 1997 14:22 | 9 |
| Best way is to go to COntrol Panel/Display/Change Settings/Change
Display type to VGA and then reboot the PC.
Now, any video utils you want to remove should be fine. If the Direct3
stuff you wish to remove is a TRUE W95 application install, then you
can even use control panel/add&remove applications to remove the stuff.

DirectX is not shown at all in Add/Remove programs. Someone told me it
gets buried down deep and is not un-installable unless you do a format
and re-install the OS (which I don't want to do, but will if I have to)
and I think MS screwed up by doing it that way. I had it installed here
at work (DirectX2 from Doom95) and it doesn't show here and neither
does X3 show at home. Not a good move as it is basically forcing you to
use this for some programs and if you have trouble between it and your
video card drivers (some as about replacing, others don't/won't) you
will have to do a total re-install which is a bunch of garbage! ;-)

| If I rerun the setup program for DirectX, I have a command button that
says, "Restore Original Drivers". When I click it, it uninstalls
Direct(stuff) that it had installed and restores the original drivers.
Does anyone else see it?

I think I have seen that, and didn't even bother to try that. I don't
know where it stores the original stuff. I have been having enough fun
trying to load the newer #9 drivers from floppy. Apparently you have to
run their setup in order to update the system instead of selecting it
in device manager and selecting "have disk" option. I went round and
round a couple times last night (again, changed SCSI controller as
initial one went down for unknown reason) and will just leave system
detected/selected GXE64 Pro, then run setup from floppy and then reboot
and see what happens. But then I will re-install Diablo and have to
start again since I lost the other files on the disk(s) they were on
initially and don't have save files, time to start hacking/slashing
again! ;-) And I will keep that in mind about the restore option if I
start having lockups again.

2470.10 | be careful of DirectX v 3.0 | SPSEG::BRAMSON | | Thu Jun 05 1997 15:21 | 36 |
| I should have read these notes before installing DirectX 3.0 last
night. The installer wanted to replace my latest Matrox drivers with
older ones that were "certified" with DirectX 3.0. I said NO to this.
There is a consequence of last night's install that has me baffled. I
used to be able run games like Duke Nukem 3D and especially Comanche 3
via shortcuts from the Windows 95 desktop in a DOS box. After
installing DirectX 3.0, I now get a nagging dialog box which warns me
that these programs may not run properly under Windows 95 and then asks
me if I want a new shortcut made which will restart the machine in DOS
mode before launching the game. Well, if I ignore this, the box keeps
on coming back. In the case of Duke Nukem, it will no longer run from
the Windows 95 desktop. Comanche 3 freezes up totally as well. If I
allow a new shortcut to be made which will switch to DOS before
launching the game, the games still freeze up. They will run if I
manually shut down to DOS.
I guess I have done something terrible since I see no way to totallly
get rid of this side effect. I do see the Direct drivers come up when I
go into settings|control panel|add-remove programs, but when I click
the remove button, it brings up the dialog box from DirectX which shows
me what I have installed and gives me the ability to restore my
previous audio drivers (not video since I did not let it write over
them). So for now it looks like I am stuck UNLESS I totally clean my
disks and start from scratch (which would be a real pain). Of course I
could also give up my games, but that is unacceptable.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Sympathy would also help. I wrote
this lengthy message as a warning to anyone else that may be thinking
of upgrading their version of DirectX.
Thanks for any help/suggestions.

2470.11 | | LEFTY::CWILLIAMS | CD or not CD, that's the question | Thu Jun 05 1997 16:30 | 11 |
| Try reloading your original video drivers again. When W95 asks you if
you want to use the ones already on the disk, say NO and reload them
from the floppies you got from Matrox.
This should fix the problems...
BTW, the DirectX 3.0 release notes do describe this process, and the
need to reload the video drivers after the upgrade...

2470.12 | Will try this tonight....film at 11 | SPSEG::BRAMSON | | Thu Jun 05 1997 17:31 | 7 |
| Thanks for the tip, Chris. I will try this tonight. I never read the
release notes as they were not part of the archive that I expanded from
the ZDnet download. Will update notes after I try this fix.

| The release notes, etc, should be on the Microsoft web site...
That's where I pulled our kit from.
There's also a useful DirectX FAQ on the S3 web site - I think they
mentioned this little hack there also.
