You can't get on the beta. You can't legally use a copy of
the beta. It's not on MSDN, at least not yet.
IE 4.0 should be out by the end of the month for open beta
testing. Downloadable from the MS servers.
Memphis, a.k.a. Windows97, probably won't go to an open
beta, but then, who knows. I wouldn't expect to see anything
available for quite a while.

| Does anyone have the OSR2 .CAB files available on-line? Since we have a
corporate-wide Windows-95 license, I'd like to build my recently failed
office PC with OSR2 and have the details to use the raw CAB files to do
just that.
Does anyone have the OSR2 .CAB files online that I could grab?

Right, but your question in .32 is still valid. I have not heard of
any license agreement that allows us to install this OSR2 on anything
other than new PCs, presumably for sale and number of licenses tracked.
I could be wrong... Normally, one can look on the ccs page to find
kits to which DIGITAL has licensed for internal use. I only saw the
standard Windows 95, not the OSR2.

2317.37 | or perhaps not... | PCBUOA::KRATZ | | Mon Mar 24 1997 15:37 | 67 |
| SEATTLE, March 24 (Reuter) - Microsoft Corp was off more
than four percent Monday, after reports that the successor to
the Windows 95 operating system could be delayed until 1998.
Microsoft was down 4-5/8 at 89-3/8 and was the most active
Nasdaq issue after the reports that the Windows 95 update,
code-named Memphis, probably would not be released in 1997 as
previously anticipated.
Industry analysts said the likely delay of the operating
system update would have little financial impact on Microsoft
but could reflect a diminishing corporate appetite for frequent
software upgrades.
"For large organizations every year and a half to two years
is too fast for new versions," said David Rothschild of Piper
Jaffray. "Every three or four years is more like it."
Jonathan Roberts, director of product management for
Windows at Microsoft, confirmed that computer manufacturers had
been told they would not get the operating system code in in
time for holiday season shipments to the retail market.
He said developers still expected to issue the first major
beta test version to customers by June 30. He declined to
comment on a projected final release date, saying that would
depend on feedback from testers.
But computer manufacturers that sell in major retail
outlets generally need final code by July to ship their
products in time for the holiday season, Roberts said.
He added that it would be "desirable" to synchronize the
retail release of the software to coincide roughly with
shipments on new computers.
The Windows 95 update will include several major new
features including integration of Microsoft's forthcoming
Internet Explorer 4.0 browser with the user interface.
While most of the new performance-related features are
ready, developers are still working on the new browser, which
addsd "push" technology features and comes hard on the heels of
version 3.0 of the browser, a major update released in August.
Widely publicized security flaws discovered recently in
Explorer 3.0 might be part of the reason Microsoft has decided
to go slow with the operating system update, some analysts said.
"It's fair to say Internet Explorer got a fair amount of
heat for the security problem," said Larry Dietz of Zona
Research, an analyst at Zona Research.
But he also said Microsoft could be "throttling back a
little" because of resistance to frequent upgrades from
corporate users.
Rothschild said the Memphis delay would be unlikely to
affect Microsoft's earnings or revenues significantly,
particularly because the software giant defers much of the
income it gets from operating systems.
But he and other analysts noted the company's stock is
still relatively high priced compared with its expected growth.
"It's an expensive stock, and whenever you get a whiff of
bad news it's going to behave like this," said Mike Wallace of
UBS Securities. "I don't think it's a big deal."
