| Re .20
nibble mode is the slowest - there are a number of other settings that
improve performance. EPP on my HiNote Ultra gave me a 2:1 boost over
nibble mode.
I'm about to try the other settings.
I got the following from the Iomega web page
(http://www.iomega.com/support/techs/zip/2064.html)
Sorry for the wierd wrapping but that's Notes vs WWW access.

Revision 001
Document #2064
Zip Parallel Port Mode And Speed Options For Windows 95
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
This document applies to the following:
Operating System: Windows 95
Device Type: Parallel Zip 100
Software Version: 3.03 4.00 4.01 5.0 5.1
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Iomega recommends upgrading your Zip software version to either 3.03 or
4.01. These versions have a utility called the Parallel Port
Accelerator
that will automatically optimize your parallel port in most cases. To
modify the parallel port setting manually, refer to the Changing The
Parallel Port Setting section of this document.
Changing The Parallel Port Setting: Use the following procedure to
manually change
the adapter setting of the Iomega Parallel Port Zip
Interface:
1. Click once with the right mouse button on My Computer.
2. Click on Properties then click on the Device Manager tab.
3. Double click on the line that reads SCSI Controllers.
4. Now double click on the Iomega Parallel Port Zip Interface.
5. Click on the Settings tab. You should now have a box labeled
Adapter
Settings.
6. In this box you are going to type in a Mode, Port (optional), and
Speed setting. Port settings are based on the parallel port
address of
your system. Use the following table to find a valid mode setting:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mode Mode Ver Ver
Ver Ver Ver
Setting Description 3.03 4.00
4.01 5.00 5.10
Nibble Slowest mode Yes Yes

Bidir Bi-directional mode Yes Yes

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: If you are unsure about what type of parallel port you have, try
the
Nibble, Bidir, EPP, or Fast mode settings. The Bidir, EPP, and Fast
setting
do not force the driver to load in the specified mode. If the driver
cannot
load in the specified mode, it will load in the Nibble mode.
7. Once you have selected a mode that you think will work with your
parallel port, you will need to specify a speed setting. Speed
ranges
are from 1-6 with 6 being the fastest setting.
8. Port settings are optional and only need to be used if you have
more
than one parallel port and want to specify the port address the
Zip
drive is on. Port addresses are usually 378, 278, or 3BC. To find
the
port address of the parallel port the Zip drive is on, refer to
the
Finding Your Port Address section of this document.
9. Once you have chosen the mode, speed, and port settings for your
drive, you are ready to type in the adapter setting. The following
example shows how to type in the adapter setting if you chose to
use
the Nibble mode with speed 6 on port address 378:
/mode:nibble /port:378 /speed:6
10. Once you have typed in the adapter setting, click on OK to
continue
then click on OK to close the Device Manager. You will be prompted
to
restart you computer. Once you have restarted your computer, the
adapter setting change will be complete.
Note: If your computer will only boot in Safe Mode or the Zip drive
does
not function properly after restarting your system, then the adapter
setting you chose is not compatible with your parallel port. You will
need
to repeat steps 1-10 and choose another adapter setting. If changing
the
adapter settings didn't change the performance of the Zip drive, you
may
need to upgrade your parallel port.
Finding Your Port Address: Follow steps 1 and 2 in the Changing The
Parallel Port
Setting section of this document to open the Device
Manager. Now
use the following procedure to determine the LPT port
address the
Zip drive is using:
1. Double click on the line that reads Ports (COM & LPT).
2. Double click on the LPT port the Zip drive is using. For example,
if
the Zip drive is on LPT1 then double click on Printer Port (LPT1).
3. Click once on the Resources tab.
4. The input/output range determines the address of that port. For
example, if the input/output range is 0378-037F, the port address
is
378.

2299.29 | Iomega V5.2 drivers available | CGOOA::OWONG | SKIWI in Canada (VAO) | Mon Mar 31 1997 18:29 | 7 |
| Downloaded Iomega V5.2 drivers from their web site today. Performance in
EPP mode seems to have been improved.
I still have not been able to get ECP mode on the parallel port to
work. What modes do others with HiNote Ultras use?
Owen.
