    I had been using the 'old' version of powertoys, and one thing that was
    interesting was all those extra icons on the desktop until the system
    was all the way up (maybe this has something to do with shellfix).
    anyway, I got the latest Powertoys, and installed them, and now
    everything works, but I have a mess on my desktop! Various icons
    are scattered around (basically in three vertical columns) where all
    the real icons are. I have to search a bit to find my real desktop
    icons because they are somewhat obscured by the garbage. My question is:
    how do I clean up my desktop, short of reinstalling windows? I've tried
    removing all the power toys, but no change. I seem to remember a
    warning somewhere that said "Warning: make sure you deinstall 
    <blah blah> before you do <whatever> or you'll be sorry!". Well, I am,
    but surely, there must be a way to put things right in a simple,
    straightforward manner...  Any help would be appreciated!

    Tried Control Panel -> TweakUI -> Repair -> Rebuild Icons?
    
    (TweakUI is one of the applets in powertoys.)

    also, make sure that [cursor on non-occupied part of window] [right
    mouse button] [arrange icons] [ auto arrange] is turned OFF.
    
    this also can cause some bizarre behaviors..
