557.40direct to tape ?NPSS::BENZI'm an idiot, and I voteMon Feb 10 1997 23:036
    Is it possible to 'copy' a file to a tape directly, without packing it
    as a tarfile ? (Simple examples: you want to move a tar-set from one
    tape to another (on different drives), or the tape was written with
    cpio, or dd, ...).

    I have an HP Colorado T1000e with DTA (Direct Tape Access) software
    which makes the tape drive appear to be a regular disk volume. You can
    drag and drop a file onto the tape as if it were another disk.

    I think I remember reading somewhare that DTA works with other
    types of tape drives, but I can't recall where I read that. The
    software was about $29 from HP. Check out their web pages as
    www.hp.com.
