| Here is kind of a different car speaker question. I am in the process
of restoring a '67 GTO. The original sound system consisted of an AM
radio, with a speaker mounted in the centers of the dash and rear deck.
I am trying to keep an authentic look, so I don't want to cut anything
to mount speakers. Whatever I use must go in the stock locations.
Since I now have the interior gutted, this is the time to make a
decision. I found a nice AM/FM/Casette unit with a heavy chrome face
plate much like the original. If you ignore the extra pushbuttons and
the digital clock, it looks like it belongs there. However, I'm not so
sure what I want to do about the speakers. There are two options that
I am considering. The first is to mount two 5 1/4" speakers side by
side in each of the front and rear locations. The problem here
obviously is the right and left speakers will be right next to each
other and there will be little to no stereo image. The second option
is to mount a single speaker in each of the front and rear locations,
and wire the left channel to the front speaker and the right channel to
the rear. This would provide the stereo image, but the soundstage
would be sideways. I know I will not get great results either way, but
I'm just trying to figure out which way would be best. Has anyone ever
done anything like this who might have some first hand experience with
the results? Any opinions?

If you have bit of "maneuvering room" between the mounting surface
and the dash cover, maybe a pair of 4" square speakers side by side
with the edges in the middle elevated?
That way you'd be "projecting" the sound to the correct side of the
car.

3505.11 | Angled baffle board | MILKWY::UTTLEY | It won't mean a thing in 100 years | Tue Mar 25 1997 09:54 | 7 |
| Gee SLAB, thats not a bad idea. The space is a little tight in the
front, but I think I can make up a baffle that will angle the speakers
a few degrees without getting in the way of anything. In the back, this
would be a piece of cake, since the trunk is the size of a small
pickup truck bed.
