5464.0. "10K day delta-time - Ultrix implications?" by SIOG::HANLEY () Fri Mar 21 1997 11:38

    Folks,

    Forgive me if this is a rediculous question, I am neither an Ultrix nor
    an Ultrix specialist.

    I am wondering what the implications if any are for Ultrix (V4.3) of
    the "10K day delta-time" (UNIX time issue) which is such hot news in
    OpenVMS land at the moment ?

    See VMSNOTES Note 238 for more information

    Regards and Thanks,
    Patrick.

	With computer systems able to extensively share data through
	various network protocols and RPC mechanisms, it is impossible
	to say that there isn't any implication, but left to itself
	ULTRIX won't have the problem. UNIX systems store time as the
	number of seconds since Jan. 1, 1970 GMT and won't run out of
	seconds in a 32 bit count until sometime in 2038. If some
	programmer was so unwise as to store a delta of two times
	in a 16 bit or smaller field, then that program may have
	problem, but most just use ints...
