5457.0. "Dump from the crontab" by LATINA::PEDROA (MCS Madrid) Fri Jan 24 1997 09:53

	Hi all,

I have a customer that want to run the dump from the cron in
a DECsystem 5000/240 with Ultrix 4.3A. The problem is that the dump is
   multivolumen and,

How is possible to answer "yes" to the process dump after
  	change the tape?
Is there other way to start the dump controler by time?

   Thanks in advance.
   Pedro.

Without extra software you can't run dump from cron if you
know that dump is going to prompt for another tape. It may
be possible to find a program that can run dump and answer
the prompts, but how is it going to change tapes?

Dump was designed to be interactive. If it needs a tape
change, you really need a person sitting there to change
tapes. But, if you're using one of the sequential loaders
supported by ULTRIX, dump should be able to change tapes.
Unfortunately, I think is list is limited to the TA9x family.
Later versions may have extended the support to anything that
has the loader bit set in the devio(4) data structure, but
I've never tried it and don't have source after V4.2 to look.

I've heard of a program called "expect" that runs programs
may be able to answer prompts. If you can figure out a way
to changes without an operator present, it may provide the
function you desire. Otherwise a tape drive that has a
larger capacity than the file systems you want to backup.
	I use a TZ87N on my V4.4 system.
