276.0. "Technical Aid - resourcing company" by CURRNT::GILROYC () Mon Feb 10 1997 07:42

Has anybody any experience of a company called "Technical Aid"?

I work in the PSG group in the UK, and we have recently been told that
Technical Aid are being taken on to assist Digital in the process
of resourcing contractors (or some such similar words - I don't have
the exact wording here). The immediate change to us has been to
alter our contracts so that Technical Aid is the client instead of
Digital, but we have been told there should be no further impact.

Apparently, this exercise has already happened in the US, about 4
years ago, but I have searched this conference and found no mention of
it (though perhaps the company have a different name in the US).

Does anybody in the US have any knowledge of this? Was there any
    longer term impact to contractors?

    Thanks,

    Carol.

There are a number of notes in here on this topic. In the
US, it was called 'Section 1706'. So, do a "dir/tit=1706"
and you'll see a bunch of notes about this.

Technical Aid is a company htta has been doing business in the
contracting market for many years. They have several divisions. I have
worked as a contractor for their MicroTemps division. I never had any
problems with them. Paychecks were always on time, and they were very
good about trying to contact contractors who may have forgotten to call
    in their hours.

On the otherhand, I know several contractors here in ZKO that are
    through other agencies, including myself.

That's interesting to know - we were told that Tech Aid were already in
place in the US, acting as a sort of intermediary between agencies
and Digital. Is it possible that they are working in this way and
you don't know about it? (Seems unlikely)

I suppose it's also possible that it has only been applied to a subset
of contractors.

Just got some more information about Tech Aid's US activities - apparently
they operate a grup called THURO in the US, where they oversee and
administer more than 5000 contractors.

Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Thanks,

Carol.

As far as I know, TECHAID is just one of several Preferred Agencies.
