222.0. "Is Joe Tex from Texas?" by ESSB::IMPORTS () Tue May 20 1997 12:26

Can anyone suggest a good Joe Tex compilation. Last heard him in the
70's when he had a UK hit with "Dont dance no more, big fat woman".

    Appreciate any help.

    Thanks

555.2Not just Southern soul ballads...VARESE::TRNUX1::IDC_BSTRFri May 23 1997 08:4811
There are two or three excellent Joe tex compilations on the UK Charly
label, although they're pretty difficult to come by these days. I've
got "The Very Best Of Joe Tex", a double album which dealls with his
Dial period. A lot of deep soul ballads, if you're into that bag.

Look out for some of his early stuff too - Tex branched from gospel to
black rock & roll ( la Little Richard). I recall hearing a rock & roll
track that he cut early on called "Open Up The Door (And Let Me In)" -
    a real firecracker.

Thanks for all the info, folks.

I will be in the States in October. Are any of the mentioned
compilations easily available in US record shops?

Glad to see you're still "talking" to me Dom, after the Cantona
    bust up :*)

You'd certainly have no trouble finding any/all in Boston or New York.
Probably in any large city and most college towns in the vicinity of a
  city (that's a guess).

I'd be surprised if you couldn't find then on the web as well (CDnow?)...

If you get to HMV in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA, you will probably
have the best chance. The guy in charge of the ordering for the
Blues/World Music/Soul/Gospel room has done a *great* job. It has a
    much better section than Tower.

Ditto on HMV. Was just in there the other day. If they
don't have what you are looking for they'll get it for
    you.

HMV (and Tower) are highly visible in NYC too, as well as a Virgin/Sony
megastore and other delights (Second Coming, Revolver Records) in NYC.

In the Boston/Cambridge area of Massachusetts, there are belts of record
stores from Copley > Kenmore Squares (Boston) and Harvard > Central
  Squares (Cambridge).

Store names include HMV, Tower (Boston outlet is better than Cambridge),
Newbury Comics, Strawberries, Mystery Train, Nuggets, Second Coming, CD
Spins, Looney Tunes, Planet Records, Cheapo Records, on and on.

So if you don't have time to wait for an order to arrive... store hop.

And of course, Stereo Jacks between Porter Square and Harvard Square.
    Specializing in blues.

Newbury Comics is my favorite store, but I generally shop in NH and I listen to
more than just blues. They specialize in alternative/indie CDs/records/t-shirts
and they do sell comic books. They generally have some pretty good prices, too.

Newbury does carry some blues, jazz, reggae, etc. and they do tend to have some
of the local releases like "Monster" Mike Welch, Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson or
Ronnie Earl.

Check out their web page at http://www.newbury.com/

Oh, I also stop in at HMV when in Harvard Square.

As a matter of fact, I didn't realise it was you, Des. But I'll leave
my reply in here all the same ;-)

Anyway, what Cantona bustup? There's nothing but intelligent, reasoned
    debate in the FOOTBALL conference...ahem.
